This curious little game has piqued my interest for a while now. I've heard people say that it's a crappy budget title with a whole lot of fetch quests. I've heard other people say it's got one of the most mature storylines in any action-rpg to date. From what I've heard, the soundtrack is terrific. So what do I need to know? Is it bad? Is it a misunderstood gem? If you've played it, if you could be so kind as to fill me in on what to expect, it would be appreciated.

Also, on your second playthrough you get to hear what the monsters are thinking? That's just damn cool.

I personally liked the game, but yeah there are a lot of repetative fetch quest and endless trudging from location to location, plus some baffling timewasters of minigames (seriously, fishing and gardening?). But then again as has been previoulsly stated the story is great the combat is simple but fun and the boss fights are really interesting. If you want to know more check out Yahtzee's review on this site under his Zero Punctuation feature. He sums it up perfectly.

The bosses are the most annoying things ever, but the game is nice, the soundtrack is delicious and I like the game overall. Although emil's sister can be a bit creepy. Oh yeah, Weiss has the best character.

I saw the intro and have been waiting for the price to come down for awhile. Maybe I'll check this out at some point.

The whole thing may seem to drag, but that maybe because I got it through Nier and wanted to get it done fast.
Combats not the best.
But if you get really into the RPG idea, then all the fetch quests make sense. Nier is one of the few strong, able bodied men in the village. He has a sick kid at home, but no profession to pay for medicine or really food, so he must do all the villages odd jobs for finicial support.

Its a pretty good game. If you want to make the most of it, then set out a good amount of time, because you'll be spending a lot killing X number of Y to get Z number of resource A to either make/upgrade item B or complete side quest C.

I liked the game , fun little time waster . I recomend playing on hard since the game is pretty easy ( i played my first playthrough on hard). It's a fun game to go through the story. But don't spend more time than needed on it . Just do the main story don't bother with side anything . If ot's cheap i say pick it up and give it a go.

Also loom at the zero punctuation of Nier . I personally hated the music , this is the only game i played on mute . It's full of 10 second loops that after 20 hours of playing you never want to hear again . I really don't understand why people praise the music .

I would support it for the simple fact its a japanese RPG with a character who isn't an androgynous/effeminate male teenager.

I own it and i've played it a bit.. honestly I only grabbed it because you get to fight a boombox robot in it and I saw it on sale. Its not the worst game out there, and you can skip most sidequests if you want to. Its balance is fairly shoddy but it can be worth it as a budget title.

Its made by Cavia, the same people who made Drakengard. That should give you some idea of what to expect from it. Prepare to get trolled, and hard, by everything. The story, the gameplay, the quests. Cavia hates gamers, its a proven fact.

That said, if you like Action-RPGs Nier is actually really good. The fetch quests are a pain, but unless you are going for the special endings they are not required. The dialouge is well written and there are a lot of good characters (heck, the banter between Nier and Weiss is almost reason enough to do the sidequests). The story is dark, very dark, Cavia dark, and if you play through a second time it adds a bunch of new scenes that only makes it darker. But its still enjoyable. Oh, and you'll be seeing the same few dungeons over and over again, so get used to them. Especially the gorram machine cave.

Oh, and the soundtrack is great.
