He's Serboslabian... To be honest I think Rockstar made his nationality ambiguous on purpose, that way they wouldn't get a million "internet experts" leaving them nastygrams about how the actor's diction is wrong.

This wouldn't be such a bad idea, actually. I wonder how accurate this statement is...?

I've always understood Niko Bellic to be Serbian, but his back story is pretty interchangeable.

He's Serbian and everyone says it. I can go to WikiPedia and put there, that he's from Russia, if I wanted. He's Serbian or Bosnian, hell, maybe even from Belarus. We can't argue about it, because he's a freakin video game character, and was born in someone's imagination. If he would have been a real human, born somewhere, we could know. He could be from anywhere. He could even been born in China for all I care, and just lived in a city that's society was full of Serbians.

But don't go calling anybody who's from Kosovo Serbian or you will get a fist to the face. You've got to tread a fine line there, as the scars of war are still pretty fresh.

Well I suppose all this thread has proved is that no one knows for sure. Hell, I feel like emailing rockstar and asking them. Maybe I will...No, I wouldn't want to bother them, they're busy making Midnight Club: LA. I suppose we'll never truly know.

My theory is Serbian. Although Rockstar probably could never get into specifics. Anybody remember the freakout caused by the Cuban-Haitian gang war storyline in Vice City? They had to go back and edit it out.
