This happened with Gitmo as well. Why is it that people are so adamantly against helpful things being close to them? Sure there is the whole misconception of jails nearby being unsafe. Also certain things bring down your property value. But that is the thing. Why should a homelesss shelter bring down your property value? If anything, I would think it should raise it! That way, in the recession, if you lose your job, DING a homelesss shelter is right around the corner :D
But in all seriousness, why do you personally believe people are obsessed with this idea of not having things near them?

I suppose, but that would be the extreme of narssicism to damn others so you look arbitrarily better in some rich guy's eyes who doesn't even look at you in the first place.

Well if you have the money why would you want to live next to homeless people.
It is not as if they are going to magically ruin your life if you pass a homeless shelter on your way to work.

I'm just saying. I don't really give a shit where I live, as long as it's not a waste of my money.
I apologize if I seemed to be implying that you felt this way. I am just confused as to how anyone can say "nope I'd prefer you die somewhere far away from me than live happily next to me".

There are safety issues I suppose w/ drugs, alcohol and stealing. Not to mention all the annoying begging for money.

Well usually more homeless means more crime, and we all can agree it's worth paying to stay away from crime.
I am not talking about random homeless people being in the streets. I am talking about shelters. If you don't know, most shelters have extremely strict curfew/etc. rules. Partially due to there not being enough room for the ones that don't listen.

I wouldn't mind homeless shelters or cheep apartments which they could live in.

I would mind rehab, cause lot of junkies doesn't get clean, and will prolly steal stuff to afford drugs while they're there. I think rehab should be in desolate places, that way the junkies wont have acces to drugs even if they want to, so it migth help them get clean.

I do see the logic in that, and you will have to pardon my lack of knowledge. However, I am under the impression that rehab patients must stay at the clinic until they are done. I wouldn't know, but that is just my guess. If not, they should make rehab centers start to implement this kind of thing.

Also, it is not only about homeless people, prisons or gitmo prisoners going to pre-existing prisons apply to this thought process as well.

I can't say for sure whether rehab is closed or not, i don't know anyone who's ever been there, i'm just thinking that if some junkies are willing to stab people to death to get money for the next shot of heroin they can prolly escape as well.
One of my friends live right next to a street thats infamous for hookers and junkies, he hasn't been living there since january cause of a fire caused by junkies lighting a bon-fire at the ceelign of the building. ironically, he was somewhere else at the moment becoming a trained firefighter. as far as i know, he'll be able to move back in this october.

Come to think of it, theres actally an open facillity for mentally ill people 5 minutes on foot away from where i live, i don't mind that.

Unfortunately, statistically speaking, a homeless shelter is likely to increase crime in the neighborhood in which it is placed, so that would explain why people wouldn't want a homeless shelter, fear for themselves and their loved ones. Other things, like people's desire not to have prisons near them tend to be more aesthetic, as the fear of a prisoner escape, statistically speaking, is simply irrational.

Why am I opposed to homeless shelters/low income housing/whatever anywhere near me? Because in the city I live in, the neighborhoods near the social services tend to be dumps because the bums, meth heads, and assorted crazy people have a fortunate tendency not to wander too far afield. This means that unless I see them on the bus, I can otherwise not have to smell them, listen to them, or otherwise acknowledge that they exist.

Am I a snob? You bet your ass I am. I'm a Republican, we're not known for our compassion.

seriously i always laugh at this. oh yeah, because a gang is going to hang out next to a jail, and when those criminals get released they're just going to walk outside and start shooting up the nearby houses. lol. i guess because people don't think jails are beautiful? things you say NIMBY to are usually stinky or ugly.
