I ask because there are two types of people. One that believes that Ninja wear masks, and makes only (including clothing I'm sure) and the other that believe that they don't necessarily have to. On one hand, you have to think of it in an almost super hero sense. Ninja are involved in some pretty gritty stuff, so anonymity is very important if you are to lead a normal life. an alternate life, or pseudo personality if you will. But do Ninja really have beers with their buddies after work? Are they Ninja all the time, or just sometimes and then Carl the other? Family is a given, so if an enemy knows who you are than they can most likely find your loved ones and do nasty things to them or use them as bargaining chips.

Then you have to take in the consideration of the other side. Anonymity is almost useless, assuming that anyone that sees are most likely going to end up dead by your hand anyway. so what's the point of wearing a mask? If you take the Samurai approach towards it- I only unsheath my sword if I'm going to kill someone...

So what group do you fall under? Traditional- masks 'till the end of time. Or Unmasked- They're bad-ass motherfuckers and masks are for people that can't get poon by any other means. (that last one probably didn't make much sense)

The difference between the legendary black-clad mask wearing ninjas, and the ones that actually lived is that the real ones didn't need masks. The best mask of all, and the best form of invisibility is rather low-tech and unglamorous, and I'll share it with you: act like you're supposed to be there already.

You heard it - the ninjas that actually lived and carried out assassinations (which were exceedingly rare, mind you), often got jobs as gardeners or other peasant-class working stiffs. Important guy dies in the middle of the night, you don't go looking for the guy with a set of hedge clippers straight away; you're looking for the guy in the mask. Unmasked provides plenty of access, and lots of time to watch them squirm while they try to sort out what happened. Much more badass than the legend, don't you think?

These are my thoughts on the matter. Being unmasked allowed you to fit in much better in nearly every situation, and it allows for an overall easier and less dangerous mission, be it an assassination, or something else.

Unmasked. Hey the Japanese emperor employed ninjas as secret bodyguards. I don't think they would blend in if they had a bloody mask on.
