Im doing an assessment on the true ninja (a.k.a Shinobi)
and part of the essay im writing is misconceptions and popular belief - and how 'real' it really is.

Point is, ive run into a bit of a stump - I wanna know about Ninja Smoke Bombs- where they were real, whether it was really effective- and so forth.
Though whenever i use that good ol buddy google and his cousin Wikipedia - all i get is HOW TO guides.

I have a suspicion that smoke bombs were a creation of fantasy or just an elaborate story to explain the use of Black Eggs, but i want to know if anyone from the escapist can give me relevant sites or useful information.

Cheers.

PS - I will be checking this thread consistently over the next month so any help will be noted.

Well, i don't know anything about the smoke bombs; if they did exist or not. so i'm no help here.

Instead, I'll just wish you luck on your assessment.

Ninja'd.

I really just said that, didn't I. *Facepalm*

On topic, I can only guess as to whether or not ninjas used smoke bombs, since I'm not much of a historian. And by that I mean, "all I know about history is that my history teacher laughs at the French for their war strategies."

Though, as a guess, I would say using them wouldn't be very logical, as they seem kind of... Inefficient, except maybe to get out of tight situations, and even then it's basically like saying, "There was an intruder here!" But, this is the human race we're talking about, so I wouldn't be surprised if they used the unsubtle little things. I would imagine one would have to run very fast and run very quietly if they had to use one, but hey, ninja, right? They're supposedly masters of stealth and the like, so I'd believe it.

...

I really just said that, too, didn't I. I hate myself.

I thought the whole Myth of a Smoke Bomb came from the Black Egg? (A hollowed out egg filled with crushed glass, that they painted black and threw into the eyes of their enemies.
Ninja'd on the black egg. You have my respect friend

I know about the black eggs... Hollowed out eggs filled with finely crushed glass and the oils of a very hot pepper... this was the "Smoke" or "Sand" that they apperantly thre in people's faces.

Smoke bombs. I do believe they had these, though I completely forget HOW they worked. I know that it wasn't as violent as most shows/movies/stories tell. It was basically like your U.S. Army smoke grenade, but on a smaller scale...

Though I can't really find a great deal of solid evidence beyond movie references and so on, I know that the technology for such things was around at the same time as Ninjas. Unless you can find a real source I think that writing something along the lines of "it is entirely plausible that the Ninja used such methods as smoke bombs as a way to conceal their exit" or what have you.
