So how long until they give up on this thing, realising they can't compete with Activisions established hold on kids, and Disney's better stable of characters?
Toadfish, Toadfish, it's an experiment that they are running with and a very ambitious one at that which seems promising enough. Let them have their moment. If this whole amiibo thing turns out to be a failure (which I doubt), then we can all say that here and now, you were right.

OT: Those look sweet. I know one of my friends in particular is going to want the Mega Man figure for sure.
How is doing what other people have already done but better an experiment?
What other company has made toys with NFC support that are supposed to work with every future game of the company even if it's unrelated to the IP?

Amiibo are basically DLC unlock-keys that are one time buy, work on many games.
Imagine if Activison sold a $13 key that unlocked all map packs in all future CoD games. That's what Nintendo's Amiibo's are.

Also how many console game shave learning AI's? As far as I know, only CS1.6 had learning bots and only because they were community made. That's Amiibo in Smash.

Nintendo have already stated they lock to one game.

Only for when the game has to write data on the amiibo. Games that just read data (for example Hyrule Warriors) aren't affected by this.
Currently the only game that is writing data on the amiibo will be Smash. MK8 and Hyrule Warriors will be only reading data. I don't see the next Yoshi game or Captain Toad's adventure write data on it either.

So while it is more limited than what I've read about when I made that post, it didn't change much. It's still not something that has been done. It's not revolutionary or anything that big but it's not "done but better". It will obviously have it's limitations.

Let's be real, these are gonna sell like hotcakes no matter how doom and gloom you want to be about it.

Yeah, overpriced collectables compatable only with a system that has been outsold by actual next gen systems its entire lifecycle. They'll just fly off the shelves.

Ehh...I think you underestimate the loyalty of customers when it comes to brands.
I mean just any brand. I'm not gonna say it'll out sell Disney, but it might give extra incentive for people to try the WiiU this holiday season.

Also, I wouldn't quite count out the WiiU just yet, I'm eagerly waiting for the sells numbers of the system after the holiday season and Smash Bros finally comes out. We'll see what happens.

I'll tell you what will happen - it won't sell, because its not appealling to anyone other than Nintendo diehards - the type who have already bought a WiiU.

And you talked about brand loyalty, and then talked about how the figures will appeal to people who aren't enamored already with Nintendo brand. What?

Hmm that's not really what I meant, I think my lethargy is starting to show. I was referring to brand loyalty when it came to the figures and increased interest buyers when it comes to the WiiU.

I mean the figures will sell and yes sell to Nintendo fans sure but I really doubt they'll fail. Hell, I'm personally not fan of the figures but just glancing at this thread I know these will sell like hotcakes.

Personally, I haven't bought a WiiU and I'm a Nintendo fan. I'm just waiting for the right software to come out for the system and I feel like this year will be the year I'll buy one. I'm sure I'm not alone here either, Smash Bros is a system seller and it has been that way since the series introduction.
Meanwhile I'll wait until Sony and Microsoft has something I actually want exclusively on their system before I buy.

And besides that, who really knows for sure? Since Nintendo is also marketing towards kids and families. Kids might look at the figures and think they are pretty cool and choose to buy that system. The WiiU does currently have more family friendly games than either PS4 and Xbox One right now.

They'll have my money when they announce more expensive variants that match the concept figures. These things take up space, and I'll pay a premium to fill my finite space with stuff that looks nice.
