I agree with you there after seeing the video. Gotta love the fact that it's a whole bunch of hipsters and business people using it in the commercial. Nintendo has had a harder time marketing the 3DS' ability to do it's glasses free 3D so I guess it's going to have to go with this crap to attract NA sales.
What strikes me as strange is why they think they have to go this route. The only people truly interested in buying a handheld device for the steep price of $250 are already planning on buying it. If their product is as awesome as they let on, word of mouth will sell their product after the release.

If it's just the 3G stuff, I'd be fine without it. I've survived offline when I'm outside for years, and I'll be fine with that for a while, as long as they allow wi-fi even if you don't have the 3G (and besides, we haven't gotten a clear answer on whether it would be a paid subscription or not yet)

As far as separating it from phone games... as long as I can play a twin-stick top-down shooter on it, I'll be happy. I mean, twin-stick just seems like it belongs on the portable scene. It has such a pick-up-and-play feel to it.

All in all, I think the dual analog sticks, as plain as they may be, could make a big difference. You can tell me all you want about it not being innovative and such, but frankly, I don't care, it's something that's become engraved in my controlling sense and I'd like to see how it works going portable.

As far as competing with Apple, who knows. That all depends on what the devs do with it, not how Sony makes the console. We'll have to see.

2 Thumbsticks is a definite win for me.. but I wouldn't really want to have to carry this and a phone around with me. Stick a phone in it Sony and I'll buy 10.

Totally agree. I remember carrying around a PSP-1000, that was heavy enough, and this thing is bigger! I already have a Droid X, which is quite hefty itself, don't think I would carry that and an NGP.

That last sentence says it all: HARDCORE GAMERS. Someone playing Killzone doesn't tend to care about iPhone games much. But if they could play Killzone on the go, that's the market Sony is going after. They missed it a bit with the PSP, and now they're gonna hit it hard.

If Sony did try and play Apple at their own game, it would almost certainly lose, but it's hard to believe that the company is stupid enough to do that. When we do eventually see the marketing engine spring to life for the NGP, it seems much more likely that Sony will play up the NGPs hardcore gaming credentials and not how well it apes the iPhone.
There's a line for this this little blurb here.

Sony might as well add phone functionality because I don't see how they can justify a 3G subscription model just to have access to the PSN Store and an outdated IE browser. (The PS3 currently uses IE explorer 6, what the hell?) Anyone who may buy this probably already has access to an internet provider, has a smart/android/i phone and all NGP models will have WiFi access so Sony isn't going to catch anyone's attention by suggestting they buy another internet service.

However, if Sony were to market the NGP as a dedicated gaming device with phone capabilities that can be used with any of the available service providers, I believe that would have a chance at selling well. Heck, it would even give them an easier marketing strategy. The only thing they would have to say is, "Hey, we made a new portable gaming system that works like a phone and... you can download titles like xenogears and vagrant story onto it."

I know the xperia play is supposed to be like that but I have the feeling it's going to miss the mark somehow.
