He means revolutionary in that it goes round in circles.

Any other way would be crazy.
Im accually wondering if this was indeed a translation error...

Or the press caught him in a really good mood, and he was all 'fuck it, let hype some more'

Still dosnt stop me wanting the hell out of it thou...

Maybe they aren't talking about the circle, but the method of selection. It sounds like you select an item by rotating the remote, the way you pretended you were doing it with those things in Metroid Prime: Corruption, which could speed things up, I guess?

Wait a minute!
Revolutionary. Radial menu. Nintendo revolution.
I sense some manner of revolutionary conspiracy. I didn't ask for this, Nintendo.

I'm going to wait for the chance to actually try the menu system out before I say whether or not it's like every other radial menu system around.

Pretty insane idea, isn't it?

I was thinking that...and that menu was really only that great in the Wii version, in the GC version the sheer number of items made it tricky to select anyting with the control stick.

So why didn't we hear any praise back then I wonder...?

I remember mentioning to a coworker a long time ago the similarities between Nintendo and Apple. Similar hardware design philosophies (look at the white Wii and tell me it doesn't look like it could be an Apple product), similar marketing (ditto for the Wii box), and similarly singular focus on one man (Miyamoto vs. Jobs). This just makes it seem even more so: a design often seen elsewhere, used in the company for the first time and revealed to the hard-to-impress leader resulting in rare praise from said leader? Sure sounds like that could be Apple to me.

Short of the geometrical definition of revolutionary, it's not all that "revolutionary". However, one of the most annoying parts of the Zelda games is constantly dropping into your item menu to equip the boomerang to hit one switch before you have to swap it back to something else.

From what I gather, this will reduce that break in the gameplay once you get used to it, because you'll be able to hit the menu, tilt the controller in the appropriate direction for whatever item you want, and then get back into it.

So yeah, not an industry-changing event, but honestly something that's kind of overdue for the Zelda series.

Is it ironic that the only thing that's worthy of comment in a game is the menu system? Seems indicative of stagnation in the franchise, as if we needed another hint of that.

Stupid ninjas already invaded the first comment >.<'

But still, I don't doubt that the system will be great, but saying it's "unique", well, maybe for Zelda, and if it's even faster than Twilight Princess' system, then it may be a good thing.

According to Nintendo, every feature on the Wii works.

Future Escapist News Story:

From Software is reporting that they introducing a revolutionary new feature into their 3rd Souls game. "You will be able to stop the action happening on screen instantaneously. This will allow you to select items without danger. We are thinking of calling this revolutionary feature, 'pause' since it in essence allows you to pause what's happening."

So...it's a radial menu with a wii-mote? Yup, they're definitely the first to ever use that. Ubisoft, Activision, EA, Bioware, they have never used this system before. Yup, not once.

I'm seeing a lot of comments that are focused entirely on the fact that there have been several radial menus appearing in games, including Twilight Princess, that date way back. (not to mention the obligatory "Nintendo rehashes everything and the Wii sux derp-a-derp" dribble)

I would like to point out that the emphasis here is not on the shape of the menu but on the fact that items can now be easily selected on the fly and without even having to look at the screen. Radial menus have always been for allowing us to make a selection without having to scroll through several undesired options, but most have still slowed down the flow of the game, if not outright paused it (Mass Effect) in the process.

Now the new Zelda game has a system that promises to allow the player to change their equipped item without having to bring Link out of his sprint, let alone pause the game, and in the process makes the whole thing intuitive.

I may not think the update deserves to be called "revolutionary," but I do think that it's a positive point for the game that is worth noting. The prospect is very appealing to me. I imagine that players will be naturally forced into memorizing the layout of the items through the motions and through repetition and that making these instantaneous selections will come very easily. I'm eager to try it, and I'm not going to pass judgement (unlike so many people here) until I do.

I believe the last time I heard a developer laud their interface as being "revolutionary" it was Peter Molyneux talking about the menu-less system in Fabe III.

... that didn't exactly go well...
What I thought when I read this... then I read it and said to myself, "so what?"

This isn't revolutionary or even interesting honestly.

Someone should throw Nintendo a party welcoming them to 2006.
You mean 1969 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radial_menu#History], right? Radial menus are ancient, even if most people aren't aware of it. It's funny how everyone seems to have suddenly rediscovered them a few years ago.

As long as they're happy, their morale will skyrocket and will ultimately result in a better game. That is all I can think of as to why this news would be profitable. A revolutionary interface = use the same interface other games have already used 5 years ago?

Mind blowing. Really. In the negative sense.

What makes this system different than other systems, like the wheel in ratchet and Clank, is that you use the tilt and pointing functions to select your item, which undoubtedly makes it better.

This article feels sensationalist. Nothing more than to get a ton of idiots to go "Durp, that's not revolutionary. Nintendo live under a rock. SLORP". I mean what's the point of making an article about what the guys at Nintendo think of their own menu system unless it was to ridicule them.

I'm getting sick of the escapists "News".
