Nintendo Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Super Mario Bros

Super Mario Bros. turns 25 today, and Nintendo is celebrating with more than cake.

Though Mario was technically first introduced to the world through Donkey Kong in 1981, and made his debut as a hero in Mario Bros. in 1983, it was Super Mario Bros. that really skyrocketed him to stardom. Today marks the plumber's 25th anniversary of when he became "Super," with the game first released in Japan for the Famicom all the way back on September 13, 1985.

To celebrate, Nintendo has launched a videos [http://www.nintendo.co.jp/mario25th/index.html] that go over every game in the Super Mario line and drawings to win Mario-themed goodies like playing cards, tote bags, and t-shirts. There's also an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto done by Earthbound/Mother creator Shigesato Itoi, all in Japanese of course.

The best part of the celebration is the official announcement of Nintendo's Super Mario Collection Super Pack that will be released in Japan on October 21. The Super Pack is a Wii [http://www.amazon.com/Wii-Sports-Resort-Black-Nintendo/dp/B003EH0BQ4/ref=sr_tr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1284389669&sr=8-1] re-release of the game known as the Super Nintendo's Super Mario All-Stars in North America, a collection of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels (the true Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan). All of the titles were updated from NES to SNES-quality graphics, and they retain their original presentation in the Super Pack.

The collection also contains a booklet covering the history of Mario, and a CD featuring music from the NES to Wii era Mario games. It'll be priced at ¥2,500 (about $30) but has only been announced for release in Japan, much to my heart-wrenching disappointment.

However, I'm going to have hope. Super Mario Bros. was released in North America in March 1986 (and in Europe in May 1987), so it's just too early to get things started in the U.S. If the Super Pack comes overseas with the price of $30 I'll be more surprised than I was by the announcement that Duke Nukem Forever is going to see the light of day [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103223-Gearbox-Made-Duke-Nukem-Forever-Confirmed-at-PAX], but Nintendo has to do something for us too... right?

I don't get why you'd think it wouldn't be sold outside of Japan, although now you have me concerned >.>

I seriously hope that Nintendo releases this collection outside of Japan. They do realize that people around the world love Mario and all his mustached glory, right? If there is any US release, then I will be purchasing this day one.

Happy 25 years to Super Mario Bros indeed!

Super Mario All Stars is still sitting in my SNES..... loved that game and its probably one of the reasons I loved nintendo for so long and kept loyal until only a few years ago!

I think I want to buy this as soon as an english version is released.

I won't forgive Nintendo if it doesn't come to Australia. I've always been a big fan of Mario and I appreciate how the games have changed the world.

Why didn't they add Super Mario World and Super Mario 64? I'm not gonna bother buying it on release if it's just a SNES game on a disc

25 years. Has it been that long already? I gotta find a little way to celebrate this momentous occasion...

OT: If they release this, it should be a must-buy for all people who haven't already downloaded these games from the Nintendo Shop Channel.

Of course it will come to the states. Nintendo is a lot like Square Enix in the regard that they love to put new packaging on an old game and then sell it to you.

I've never liked the graphical overhaul the games got for All-Stars, so I'm not too thrilled about it being used again here.

I'd rather see an update to more modern graphics, but with the styles of the original games kept intact. Hell, I bet it could all be easily done with resources mostly taken from Super Mario Galaxy 1/2.

You know what'd be REALLY awesome?

All the Mario RPGs on one disc for the Wii. ALL OF THEM.

If they released the pact in the UK including Yoshi's Island and Super Mario World, I'd pay £25.

The extra stuff will likely be enough to get me to buy, but I really hoped they were going to put something more than Mario All-Stars on the disc.

On the bright side, I'm glad to know Shigesato Itoi is still alive.
