Nintendo Kills Fan-Developed Pokémon MMOG

Well, if Nintendo ever made a Pokemon MMO, I would hope that they'd at least try and pull it out of the exact same view they've been using in the normal games since Red and Blue. Having a proper 3D Pokemon game would be nice.

Ok, time for the unpopular opinion...
Nintendo has a right to defend their properties. Same as Disney and bootleg t-shirts of Mickey flippin' the bird, and as Bill Watterson should be doing with all those stickers of Calvin praying. As much as we all may not want to admit it, fans aren't always the best stewards of the properties they endorse. To allow unauthorized use of IPs can blur the distinctions between what is 'official' and what's not. This, in turn, can influence public perception of said IP in a negative fashion. Example: Bootleg Mickey shirts leading parents to assume Mickey is a bad role model, and inappropriate for their children. I doubt that anything the PokeMMOG team was doing would have had nearly as much catastrophic impact as that, but the idea is the same. And inferior product could potentially weaken the Pokemon brand name, especially among the target audience (children, who are not nearly as savvy as they're touted to be nowadays).
That being said, never been a Pokemon fan, and in general I wish they'd lighten up. Check out what's been produced, consider bringing the developers on board, consider releasing an official version before just dropping the hammer.

tl;dr Would you want someone else putting out YOUR stuff?

There's so many of these MMOs the only way Nintendo can shut them all down is by bringing out it's own legitimate MMO.

I guess I'm still the only one who thinks a Pokémon MMO would be a horrible game. :/
Why would it be a horrible game, everything about Pokemon screams for a PvP component, at least one which doesn't force the player to be right next to his/her opponent.

Nintendo and WotC should put together a Pokemon TCG service, like they did fort Magic: the Gathering.

This is true. As soon as you open something up to the realm of MMO, you get all sorts of unsavory characters saying any manner of racist/bigoted/sexist/whatever things, and that doesn't exactly jive with what I've seen of the Pokemon universe.

Also don't understand why anybody could possibly be surprised, as its happened before, and it'll happen again with Nintendo IPs.
Why didn't they just change the names of everything and call it "Pocket Monster Rancher Online" or something?
Boom.. problem solved, and they could be making their own money off it.

Guess Nintendo is starting to slowly turn into a Power-hungry (Lol, Wii with power) Company that doesn't listen to its fan base anymore... Like when we say "Stop spitting out so many Mario games and take the damn offers from other companies!" and like in Yahtzee's review: They took all the Advice and threw them into a pit and started making more Mario games.

Now if you gave Pokemon to the the hand's of say, Valve, you'd be Gordon Freeman with a crowbar, Smashing the skulls of little fluffy pokemon and feeding Ash's guts to Pikachu in the form of "Poke'Food". That's just for starters...

Well then, Digimon Beats Pokemon on MMO games.

Calumon: Yay for winning!

Also, can't help but put this in
If there was ever a Digimon MMO I would totally play it. I loved the games that came on PSX and PS2...though wish they were not so cheesy

Well this is interesting, though for slightly off-topic reasons. I can understand why Nintendo would can this project as it is their property. Actually I wonder if groups like these enjoy the idea of making a Pokemon MMORPG then why don't they make their own monsters/setting instead of use Pokemon? I don't think other series like "Digimon", "Dragon Quest Monsters" or "Monster Rancher" have any shame, and in some ways I liked those games better than Pokemon.

What DOES interest me is how this game is more stream-lined as a program than any Pokemon game released by Game Freak/Nintendo. It's something my sister and I notice with the Pokemon games, even with the DS versions that it just seems like the games have "awkward" flow of programming, especially the combat. The programming in this project seems better quality yet still holding the familiar combat of Pokemon. Just something I think is cool that these devs did over what the real owners lead me to suspect that they may be using old code since the Game Boy.

As a quick aside, has anyone else ever noticed that, for some reason, every time we hear about Nintendo bringing the hammer down on fan-made projects like this the project is in late beta, or primed for release, or done altogether?

Is there any particular reason, other than a sick sense of humor and flat out sadism, that Nintendo can't send off these cease and desist notices before development teams pour hours, weeks, months and even years of work into it?
Nintendo's second largest export is pain and misery.

I don't see why there is a problem: As long as the creators aren't making it for profit, are crediting the copyright to Nintendo, and not claiming ownership of the trademark what does Nintendo have to gain from shutting them down?

Its really a shame they don't make one though. I would probably pay about 10 bucks a month to play it.

New Pokemon games have online play, which allow you to trade and battle with other trainers through Wi-Fi. Not sure if you need friend codes for that or not.

And to be honest, I don't see the point of a Pokemon MMO. All you really need to be able to do with other trainers is trade and battle, and you can do just that. There's little else that taking the MMO route could offer that would improve the experience a whole lot. That, and Nintendo would have to create a whole new online service for the game (There's no way Nintendo WFC as it is could run an MMO with most of the things expected from such a game), something that they probably won't do until the next gaming generation, if that.

and it'd be ready in just one decade (assuming no delays).

Nintendo doesn't seem particularly interested in MMOGs. With their emphasis on security over... usefulness with the Wii and general lack of any support they seem more interesting in single player games and games with only a few players. Pokemon seems like a sinch to make into an MMO, but we may never know.

Well fellas, love it or hate it, one thing is clear...

Nintendo has made its stance in gaming and will stick to it no matter what.

I said it about that Zelda movie and I'll say it again.

If these people are going to devote this kind of time and energy then they need to get permission from Nintendo FROM THE BEGINNING. If they don't then they deserve to be shut down upon finishing it. Obviously Nintendo wouldn't give permission but at least then they haven't wasted the past several months.

But if they had a pokemon MMO they wouldn't be able to encourage you to buy the same game twice to catch them all.

I hope they realize that with the money they could be making they could do enough R&D to completely stomp out the competition next gen.

Nintendo pulled the same bullshit as before. Last time they shut down the zelda movie, now they shut down this. Stop being such greedy fucks, gah.
