Apparently since everyone in the world has a DS no one is buying them anymore, people are still buying Wii's though.

Well, Nintendo has been riding a wave, that I was not quite sure how long it would last. Maybe soon they might make some games to actually compete with Microsoft and Sony for gamers rather than for little kids and grandparents. I have not plugged in my wii in about a year. There has just been nothing worth buying, rather buy something for the xbox 360.

Ps: sorry, this bothered me... loses, not looses

Not exactly surprising. Though I don't actually know a single person who owns a DS...

Fucking loads who have a Wii though.

Well Nintendo can't be king forever. It will reclaim it's throne soon though, what with the 3DS and new Zelda, new Golden Sun, new Kid Icarus..

I don't know anyone who owns a DS. I won it in a competition so I sold it cause I saw no reason to own one.

I know one person who owns a Wii, but it's not plugged in and probably hasn't been for over a year. I think if they're losing money on the DS it's because they have met their target market and anything new they've released has not been new enough to stimulate their market to buy it on top of the existing products they own.

We have to remember, of course, that history proves as long as Nintendo keep re-releasing the same games in new ways and chuck out a hand-held with a new twist every year or so they'll be raking it in 'till the end of time :p

I think with the Nintendo 3DS projected price ($249-300 - http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/29/nintendo-issues-a-3ds-release-date-date/) Nintendo needs to either lower the price to make money on it. Or work on releasing the next Wii, this time with HD graphics and an online system that doesn't blow. Move and Kinect are going to make it difficult for anyone who doesn't own a Wii to buy one.

People on Neogaf are saying that sales are not that bad and the problem is a mysterious 800 million dollars loss in foreign exchange losses. Who knows how they did that, but I'm suspecting it has something to do with how Nintendo has a lot of cash or investments valued in currencies other than the Yen and not because Iwata lost his wallet at E3.

Sadly for us XXXtreme violence and T&A gamers I don't think that Nintendo are going to take this as a sign that it is time to turn Link into a serial killer who stalks and kills prostitutes who remind him of Zelda.

Yeah, I think Iwata actually complained about the fluctuating currencies a while back, saying that Nintendo lost a lot of money because of that.

Did you actually read the article? The wii sales were up it was their DS sales that were down. This is most likely due to the fact that they annoucned the 3ds and people are holding off buying more games or a ds untill it actually comes out. Its pretty standard that when you announce a new system the sales for the current one will drop off alittle.
Well, It did also say game sales were down for both wii and ds, which could be in anticipation for upcoming releases. But honestly, a good portion of wii users only play games like wii sports and wii move. I suppose what I said had less to do with the article and more to do with a personal hope of mine.

This is hardly surprising at this stage of the game most consoles would be considered to have hit market saturation and thus software unit sales become key and nintendo has been slow in that area

It's not like that. Since the NES Nintendo saw a steady decline in sales each subsequent generation. It took a complete lack of viable competition when the Wii launched for them to get their success back, but that's not going to stay, and Nintendo might see a much more significant drop from the Wii to its successor than they saw from the NES to the SNES. 3DS will sell well, but they're facing stiffer competition from Apple and Sony than they've ever seen before, and it won't be long before Nintendo is once again only known for handhelds.

I'm just waiting for that bubble to pop, and the Wii to follow up the lack of desirability of the GameCube and hit $35 secon hand so I can play Okami.

It's about time their tidal wave hits a barrier.

Hopefully by this point, everyone who wanted a DS or Wii has it and they will stop making money on console sales and might actually have to put some effort in getting good games made for their system. I haven't used mine in... oh... at least a year or more.

I only ever use my Wii to play the old Gamecube games I enjoy. The newer Nintendo games just haven't appealed to me, although I am looking forward to the new Metroid.

On Topic: Nintendo need to step away from the casual gaming market if they're going to compete with Microsoft and Sony. They've, in my opinion, spent to much money on Minigames and Mario that people have just got bored. I know I was tired of Mario about 4 years ago.

Funny fact, actually; Mario has starred in more than 300 of his own games.

More likely the 3DS announcement had everyone stopping buying them.

I can see your point there, it just feels like currently Nintendo can do no wrong because they have most of the casual gamer market cornered and of course their ever loyal fan base. Problem there I guess is it'll all get stale oh so suddenly (when the bubble pops as you say) and we may end up with, like you said, another GC on our hands.
Of course the market may prove us wrong but I can't see today's fad with depth-less, casual games going on forever.
Think I just counter argued my own post there, but in all fairness it was just an off the cuff remark to begin with :p

Supposedly the $300 million loss comes from them taking a $794 million foreign exchange, which could mean a number of things. Without that, they would've made a profit of $500 million this quarter.

They'll probably make a huge profit by the end of their fiscal year (it's what their expecting), but that's probably not gonna stop the usual "Nintendo is doomed" crowd from getting their word in.
