I understand why Nintendo does this but could they not have waited until the new smash bros and Mario kart where released before they did something like this.

I agree - it seems a bit early.
The shutdown is occurring in May which happens to coincide with the launch of Mario Kart 8 on Wii U

A move which inspires no confidence in the lifespan of their current machines.
The Wii is 8 years old this year and the DS is 10 years old.How exactly does shutting down the online services for these devices inspire no confidence in their successors?

It tells me that they have a limited time span. It appears what you and I see as limited are a bit different. I guess I'm just spoiled with still being able to log into games like Counter-Strike, Diablo II, and Starcraft.

Never used the Wii online anyway.
I seldom use the WiiU online... I watch a bit on Netflix and use the Eshop, maybe that'll change with SmashBros and Kart...
Well, as most have said, nothing of great value will be lost.

This was to be expected. You can't hold servers for your older games forever, especially when you're not charging for them outside of the purchase price.

And in an alternate universe, millions of DS and Wii consoles become useless bricks as Nintendo shuts down all of the DRM servers XD
Yet the Space Jam site from the 90s is still up. *This site is best viewed using Netscape Navigator*

I love how some people are using THIS, of all things, as an excuse to ***** at Nintendo. The Wii has been out since 2006. Do you have any idea how old that is for a home console? And people have been complaining about the Wii's online, and now they're bitching at Nintendo for getting rid of it?
You seem to be directing your comment to this forum, but nobody around here's really "bitching", are they? I think we're all quite aware that online services aren't forever...

OT: The trend everywhere seems to be that they didn't use wi-fi capabilities on these devices anyways. Personally i think i only ever used the wi-fi on my Wii for a few battles in Battle Revolution and online racing in Mario Kart after all offline tracks were exhausted.

Can't say i'm too torn up over this seeing as whenever i bust out my Wii nowadays it's only to get my nostalgia on with some Gamecube games anyways.
No, this wasn't directed toward anyone on here. I've been reading the comments sections in articles about this, and people were saying that Nintendo was pissing off their customers. I apologize if anyone on here thought I was talking about them.

I would buy a Wii U, I really would. it has far more games that interest me now and planned in the future. I'm just not willing to pay full price at the moment, I can feel a price cut coming regardless of the previous nay says.

I do have some concerns about whether or not I can still use the GTS in the Pokemon games come May 20th. Granted it's not incredibly important, but it would be a little lame. Also, will we still be able to trade between the games? That's a really important part of Pokemon that you can't do without. :/
You should still be able to trade between the two systems as long as you just connect them together, as it never required online to do that. Also, I thought the GTS for Black and White closed last year, or am I thinking of 4th Gen?
One thing I hate about the new GTS in X and Y is that you can't trade event Pokemon over the GTS because the GTS says "no that Pokemon is special." Well too bad, I've got 3 Manaphy, 3 Celebi (10th Anniversary, Pokemon Bank one, and the Relocator one), and 3 Darkrai, I don't need that many and that's what people ask for over the GTS...>.>
The GTS still works in the 4th gen I believe, and it definitely still works in the fifth gen. I do agree the no trading event Pokemon rule is really stupid. It's counter productive to the idea of trying to collect every Pokemon when you can't even get the rarest ones without doing an actual trade with someone.

It's not how old the console it self is but how old their last game is. For example http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lego_Marvel_Super_Heroes

According to the wiki that game was released on Feb 14 2014 for the DS. So one game has about 4 months of online play.

Well, not so much as bitching as commenting. But it doesn't exactly inspire confidence does it?
