If the premise of the Nintendo comments, that higher fidelity graphics equals hardcore, then they still have a problem.

This system will launch with DirectX 10 capable hardware just when DirectX 12 is likely to appear (with Windows 8 launch), which will likely be used by the next gen Sony / Microsoft consoles, so again the new Wii will be looked down and treated as a casual device. Yeah, good call Nintendo.

But they will have a window of a year a or two due to being out of step with Microsoft and Sony in their release where they will have the most graphically powerful console. They had better make that time count....

All this talk of hardcore vs. casual gamers just sounds like a bunch of pretentious bs to me. A hardcore gamer is not somebody who needs 1080p, advanced physics and graphics processing, and games about machismo space marines that look like they were directed by Michael Bay. A hardcore gamer is somebody who plays a lot of and a wide variety of games, isn't put off by fantastical, colorful, or cartoony games, does not feel the need to exude superiority and dominance over online games and various gaming forums, and, I think most importantly, considers weilding two analog sticks simultaneously to be second nature.

In my opinion, the WiiU does look like it can bridge the casual/core crowd....moreso than any other console ever- not because of the system's power, but because of the combination of so many different control schemes in one controller. I may be almost directly quoting Nintendo's mantra for the system, but it really seems to me like it's something for everyone.

a few years ago, i made a decision to get the wii over the xbox 360 with my christmas money. I had it for about a year, and then bought the 360 so i actually could enjoy playing games again. Online gaming on the Wii was a joke, and motion controls are a terrible way to play fast paced hardcore games because they break flow like crazy and its alot easier to just hit a grenade button then sit there waving your arms like a tard trying to just get your character to let go of the grenade and not kill yourself, let alone throw it stratigically! Also, compare pushing an analog stick an inch to the left shift your field of vision to having to hold your cursor on the side of the screen. Analog stick is alot more simple and effective. Its just gonna take alot to bring core gamers back to wii(U) because core gamers prefer games with a rich and immersive experience over games where one of the key appeals is "woo don't i look silly waving my arms around while pretending i am a soldier man!" What i am pretty much trying to say here is that graphics alone are not going to be what brings core gamers back to Nintendo. Motion controls are an interesting concept, but the reality of the situation is that they still need alot of work, because the truth is the easier and more user-friendly the controls for a game are, the easier it is to get into and really enjoy the game. Maybe motion controls will be alot better on the WII U, but it still looks a casual gamer platform to me with the new tablet controller and use of wii motes. And i am not saying that the WII U isnt going to be good, i am just saying that i firmly believe that this will not be enough to return Nintendo back to hardcore audience. Especially due to the fact that its pretty damn hard to market to Nintendo's large casual gamer market base while simultaneously trying to bring Hardcore players back to the WII U. but i am kinda rambling now, so i digress.

Am I the only one thinking that now that Nintendo has jumped on the graphics wagon, xbox/ps3 users will start whining once their next gen consoles come, that the WiiU is dragging down games graphically like PC users have always done?

I smell a Shitstorm in the near future.

Yeah like casting your net for the shallow idiots who use graphics to decide if a game system is for them is going to help. I think talking about a strong third-party lineup would be a better option to market on. "care" (god now we've truncated hardcore into some other abomination?) gamers want games they like and not what the Wii had. People will look past crummy graphics if there are fun games and conversely don't give a damn if it looks nice when the games suck. I think Nintendo made a misstep on there thinking here but hopefully they still know what gets there bread buttered.
