Really, I think it's your fault that your DS got damaged. Also, just pay the $50 and get it repaired instead of bitching and complaining about it.
What, that I bought it new, used it on occasion (properly), and then have it wear itself out prematurely?

Read my entire post. My DS has gone through equal torment as yours, and is completely fine. You (or a friend or family member) obviously did something to it that would break the hinges.
Possible if one of my 50+ year old parents knew what a DS was...

But it could also be a bad batch like the American market had.

I RARELY play my DS these days. I had an original version (that I got in exchange for pulling a 24 hour shift in the army) and it lasted through two deployments and all the mistreatment one can imagine resulting from such (minus the explosions apparently). A few years back I replaced the aging system with a DS lite and donated my old one to my mother who actually plays it regularly. After a few dozen uses in it's entire life, the hinge snapped.

In retrospect, the reason this seems to be common lies in the hinge itself. The ds lite hinge has a much shorter halting point than the original. Even with similar materials and tolerances, it remains likely that general use, frequently running against this hard stop, would result in material fatigue and eventual breaking. Aside from that simple logic, the fact the hinge that broke was on the right side of the device coupled with the fact that I generally hold the device in my left hand and open it with my right, seems to support this assumption.

I dropped my DS a few times and broke the right shoulder button :(
You can get shoulder buttons/shell replacements on eBay if you don't mind voiding your warranty.

My first DS's hinge shattered twice, no idea how either. After that, the right shoulder button broke twice. At which point I just said "fuck it" and bought a DS lite.

Mine broke as well, somehow. Luckily, my stepmum lets me use hers.

As the image shows, he got the screen replaced and the F**ker still works.
That looks awesome.

I've had my DS lite for a couple years, and have yet to see a problem with the hinges. My right shoulder button, on the other hand, doesn't appear to work very well, which I hope won't negatively affect any games I buy in the future.
