On topic though I don't think anyone who hasn't been pregnant should be able to decide whether it's right or not to abort a fetus. I must believe it is more emotionally and physically straining than what some teenage girl on the student council who hasn't seen a reproductive organ in her life can imagine.

OT: .... yeah, I actually did some writing for my high school newspaper. We were actually pretty neat. We once did an expose on the cafeteria serving food that hadn't been properly cooked. (It turned out it wasn't actually their fault, it was shipped to them that way - all they did was fail to re-warm it enough). The Superintendent yelled at us (for upsetting the Cafeteria staff) and made us issue a retraction. It was awesome.

OT2: As for the article itself, that was what the "...." was for. Not touching that with a ten foot pole.

Oh, school newspapers.

When I was in middle school, I was approached to write an editorial for the paper. I wrote said piece stating why the Iraq War was a bad idea (this was when it was literally just starting). Thus began the only spat of bullying I had to endure. I, being none too thrilled at being called a dumb liberal *****, never contributed again.

My high school newspaper was excessively non-controversial - I cannot remember a thing about it, even though I remember reading it at my lunch table on multiple occasions. It is something that has, quite literally, made almost no impression on me.

Wait, you were in middle school when that happened? Jesus, I feel old.

OT: I barely remember my school even having a newspaper. I think it may have come out once a year, around summer break or something. Not sure what topics were covered, since I never read it.

This is what always worries me with people in places of supposed high visibility - like school newspapers if anyone reads them. Ideas like what they spew is unnerving to say the least. I hope there is a counter voice of logic and reason opposing them.

On another note, my school newspaper never did anything like this, it was just mainly about the kids doing super-bonkers-amazing at sports whenever and wherever. And whatever school trips were on.

You know I recently read an article that said Texas was actually a Utopia... the kid who posted that goes to University at Austin. From what I understand that city is like a separate entity from the rest of Texas.

OT: my hs paper did nothing but glorify our basketball team and theater, both things I had no interest in. If the theater would have done something other than musicals it would have been a different story. But it was a bunch of crap.

I have always felt the idea that life doesn't begin at conception is a little off base. Biologically, basically every definition we use to define what constitutes life is met at conception. It more comes down to when you view this fetus as equal to the life of a fully formed human and whether or not you value that more than a persons right to choose. I am pro-choice but I still recognize that it isn't this black and white issue that the extremes in this issue seem to try to push it.

A bit more on topic, high school newspapers are the repository of some of the stupidest things ever written. The only redeeming part of my high school's newspaper was the Pokemon of the Month article.

Actually there are several conditions of life not present at conception, if you want to argue this "biologically". As a body of cells, which would already be considered alive, it would fit that definition, but as an organism it doesn't.

It can not independently control its chemical reactions (no metabolism) until much later in development.

It is not self-sustaining. And we aren't just talking about the requirements of food or protection from the elements here. We are talking about hormonal control of the chemical reactions and the development of the fetus. Without chemical assistance from external sources (the mother) the zygote will not continue to develop.

While individual cells have obvious chemical responses, the organism itself is incapable receiving and responding to stimuli. As the organs come in, they will have independent responses, but not until the brain has formed and developed will the fetus begin to experience a unified stimuli response.

Finally, and this one is a little more complex and easily debatable, it cannot reproduce. "But potential has to be considered here, right? After all children cannot reproduce and they are considered alive based on what will happen after they mature." Not entirely. Again, while this is debatable in some circles, the distinction here is that a zygote/embryo and even early stage fetus have not yet developed the systems or genitalia necessary for reproduction, while a young child has. The zygote lacks the necessary components, a childs are simply not turned on yet, or turned off in old age.

So yeah, from a biological perspective, it simply cannot be labeled a living organism until it gets past the zygote and embryo stages and into fetus. And while pinpointing the exact moment that all requirements are fulfilled is very complicated (and not consistant from fetus to fetus) it most certainly isn't all present at conception.

Your student paper really hurts my head, even if that were the case, the problem is a bit wider than what she's stating than to just throw a blanket solution on the problem that covers everything so generally.

Honestly this is the part where I feel the need to say this person is an idiot and should keep her personal feelings out of other peoples business on how they want to take care of their problems & bodies.

So I will, she's an idiot who needs to keep her opinions out of other peoples business. As much as she has a right to say it, she should have the intelligence to not say such a stupid thing.

Incidentally, I don't really care what your/anyone's 5-10 year old has to say about pretty much any issue. I've noticed a lot of high school seniors are remarkably ignorant about anything going on outside of high school.

In a similar vein, It's especially "cute" when the president/congressman/whoever gets a bunch of kids to shill for/against a particular political issue. Especially since it's pretty obvious the kids are saying what they were told to say by their parents. Actually, I'm generally opposed to using kids for political purposes regardless. It's pretty much pandering, saying "If you don't agree with us, you hate children! You don't hate childern, do you?"

Urgh, I really, really hate it when people think taking oral contraceptives means you are having buckets of sex. I take birth control pills to treat PCOS (I started taking them before I had male companions with which to have sex). So, if I, a living, breathing human, should does not have the right to say treating people with my medical condition is OK, should anyone have the right to any medical care? Is it fair to say I have no right to treat something that actively tries to ruin my life, but it's totally cool for people with headaches to take ibuprofen? You can argue about how abortion is killing babies until the cows come home (if you want to get real crazy, you could say every period is a murder, since that cell could have been a baby, and every male masturbation is a killing spree), but if I don't get treatment for my medical conditions, I don't see why you should get treatment for yours.

OT: No real memories of high school news papers, but my college did an article on a LAN party I was at, making sure to interview me and put my testimony in the article, since I was one of the only women there. Was kinda awkward, 'cause I don't usually spend time thinking about how female I am when pooshing leetle kart. I'm usually too busy shooting dirty spies in the face. Or telling the person across from me just how much of an ass they are at max volume (which is what makes LAN parties fun).

Amazingly enough, the data shows a minimal difference by party on this subject, with 87% of Republicans viewing birth control as morally acceptable, 90% of Democrats saying the same, and 89% of Independents agreeing. Of course, it could be argued that the writer was speaking of premarital sex being against the moral majority, but even that falls flat, as 59% of respondents stated that sex between an unmarried man and woman was morally acceptable. ...And I got all that from less than 5 minutes of research. Was this writer even trying? I mean yeah, it's a high school paper, but I'd have hoped that students would have started to figure out the importance of finding proper sources at that point.

By "majority of the population" I guess she was talking about Christians, which (as of my knowledge) is the majority in America, but her mistake is thinking every Christian thinks the same as her, which is amazingly naive.
