Here's something funny.

On August 9, every Australian citizen, wherever they are in the world, will take part in a national census. This will give the government valuable infomation on peoples views on finance, education and other important matters. Last census however, some people may not have take it too seriously and put under religion they were Jedis. I couldn't help but laugh.

Here's the link to the full story for your enjoyment. http://bigpondnews.com/articles/OddSpot/2011/07/28/Census_wont_count_Jedis_or_pastaferians_643352.html

I would be offended to hear my government insult my religion but I'm a Jedi and Jedi are not prideful in that manner. Only a Sith deals in absolutes.

So, they're only allowing the "sensible" religions that follow a bearded man, talk about forgiveness or wear clothes that only show the face.

Not one that does all three.

But it's Australia, I shouldn't be surprised that their regulations don't apply to those who agree with the Government already.

Remind me, what do they want to know for? If it's for determining how much people think of religion (which is its stated goal) then Jedi is as fair a religious choice as Christianity or Pastafarianism.

I totally agree on the first part. As to why they ask for your religion, I don't know. To be perfectly honest the only reason I can see for doing a census is to record population. Government could easily get peoples opinions by going on forums or... I don't know... TALKING TO PEOPLE?

I read that article and it seemed more like "Please don't do it", rather than "We won't count it" ... except that bit where they say it isn't a recognised religion, which is bullshit, because some people probably believe it, and the jokers shouldn't ruin it for them.

The problem is that the government uses the census to allocate/regulates certain fundings and rights to organised religion. The bigger problem people are complaining about are non-religious people putting the religion they're raised but not practicing now, these means religous groups (mainly christian) can say "there's X of us, so do this".

Our government is pretty weak-minded; if any of the people choosing 'Jedi' were really Jedi they would just go to parliament house and persuade the government to allow it.
