I'm going to post about a 3 year old game because Crysis 2 and I see a disturbing trend of people bashing the original.

I can't really understand all the hate that is thrown around for the game Crysis and its little brother Warhead. Personally I think it is one of the better FPS games out there, it is probably the best FPS multilayer game I've played at my friend's LAN parties when you don't have to deal with buggy connections.

The story felt as well written as a mediocre sci fi flick, maybe the only problem was taking itself a little too seriously. The single player was fun because it offered the funness of open sandbox levels with all the structure of linear paths. IE, finding new ways to invade a village, I would beat a level and go back and beat it again because I never could get enough of stalking NK troops. The biggest thing I can complain about was it was too short in the first half of the game, and as Yahtzee says, complaining about something short and sweet isn't something to complain at all over.
One big thing I find people hate was the Zero G, and the aliens, I didn't really see the validity in these complaints personally. The big floating guys were sort of annoying but the ground aliens were fairly fun to mess with, especially in warhead. Actually I hated what they did in warhead with the linear levels, felt like a COD game in some spots.

And I'll probably be ousted for this but I feel that Crysis blew Halo out of the water, I played Halo 2 (or 3...) after Crysis and my response to my friends was like "This is what people were so worked up over?" I soon converted them to a Crysis fanboys.

/end fanboy rant.

People don't like crysis because other people liked crysis, that is all.

I never really see any hate... just lots of praise for its graphics. I think you have identified a problem which doesn't exist.

Sadly I havent sat down and beat it yet, but my first impression was it was Far Cry with a power suit. Which means i'd probably like it but i have a lot of games to be playing and i wasn't feeling it and don't feel it yet either.

It's not bad... but it wasnt shock and awing for me either.

Easily the best shooter of this generation, unfortunately it was a PC exclusive and suffered from vista syndrome[footnote]Old computers can't run it so it must be shit.[/footnote]. I'm personally very excited for the sequel, if they avoid the less fun alien and vehicle sections of the game it could potentially be amazing. I seriously can't praise the gunplay enough (it was as good as, if not better than, any call of duty game I've ever played), the destructible environments were fantastic, a little buggy at times but consistently better than BFBC2 (which was praised for its relatively poor attempt). The gameplay is very, very solid and the graphics are phenomenal, I don't know why people seem to think mindless shooters need a compelling, unique story...they don't.

I played it, I didn't like it. Simple really. Once I got past the suit powers I got bored, and it's multiplayer kept me playing for 10mins, then never to be touched again.

Did use the Sandbox 2 Editor for our game mod though, as it was set on an island.

Apart from the graphics, I felt it didn't have anything good.

Well there is SOME hate, but not enough to make me feel as if I should rant about it.

Maybe, I haven't really seen it here except for a post or two, but it seems I've seen a lot of anger towards it in other mediums.
I'm not really ranting at you guys, I'm just wanting someone to explain why people thought it was a bad game. Clearly it was better than most other FPSs of the the first decade.

The you've been looking in the wrong places. Plenty of people hate it, bashing it as catering for the elite, having shoddy AI and a crap story. I disagree on those last two points, feel it was a great game and could personally run it on decent specs and thus felt it was great :3

Can I get Xbox 360 achievements with it? I heard you can get them on some Games for Windows.

If that's the case, I love it.

It was pretty cool but it barely grew beyond a tech demo for me. There were some flashes of brilliance there though. It's my personal opinion that moving it to a city will lose some of the game's uniqueness but perhaps I'm wrong. Could be I love it.

I don't know anyone who's said anything bad about Crysis except that it has framerate issues on most PCs which were current when it was released.

Considering I live in a country that's about 3 - 6 months behind the rest of the world in PC tech, and I'm already a few years behind in upgrading, I don't think I'll be rushing out to buy it OR Crysis 2 anytime soon.

But I also won't say anything bad about them until I've played them.

I may say something bad about this though:

My flatmate's laptop was supposedly made with Vista in mind.

By the time Vista has finished starting up, there's no physical memory left to run any programs, so it's already using Hard Drive space to create a swapfile. For some reason, this swapfile, instead of having a fixed maximum size, just takes up more space the longer you leave the machine on for. if you put the laptop into hibernate mode, if instantly eats another full Gig of space for when you open it up again.

It HAS the option to set a maximum size for this swapfile. It just doesn't work.

It HAS the option to set a maximum size for temporary internet files, too. This also doesn't work. Changing browsers doesn't make a difference, and it works properly with the same versions of the same browsers in different OSes.

I worked in a tech support call centre for over a year. EVERY call where the customer used Vista was a mission to resolve, not because I'm unfamiliar with the OS (3 computers I was regularly using were running Vista), but because it never does what it's supposed to, often even when it says it's doing what you've told it. I've had multiple customers change a page of settings, hit apply, restart the computer when prompted, go back to the page and every option is back where it started. I've had the same thing happen to me, so I Can't even blame them for doing it wrong (although I'm sure at least one did)

I think most people didnt care as the system specs where too high at the time.

And also it played just like a standard sci-fi FPS.

Imporve graphics all you want, it wont stop games getting boring if thye are generic as hell.

I don't dislike Crysis. In fact, I enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm just hoping that Crysis 2 isn't a crappy console port like so many games these days. The PC is the only place to really enjoy Crisis and be able to take in the stunning visuals.

The game was fantastic and one of my favorite FPS games in a long time, it was more than just a mere "tech demo". Most people who complained about the game being boring and whatnot typically went through and just used stealth and took very few risks, therefore wasting the suits potential and a weapon and tool. The game had a ton of versatility and fun and engaging gun play, I didn't find the gun play nearly as vapid as other FPS games *cough* valve*cough*.

I will agree that the aliens were a bit of a bore to fight and were not as fun as the koreans, but warhead made it better with making the aliens more aggressive and whatnot.

I just pray to god that Crysis 2 does not suffer from being multiplat. I don't consider myself a PC snob or anything, but I will be pissed if they dumbed down the game just to suit the consoles.

The only hate I know about is console fanboys mocking PC elitists because Crysis was their crown jewel in almost every arguement.

I like warhead, never had a chance to play the original though so no hate from me.

I loved the game. People pay so much attention to the graphics and they seem to forget that there is a very solid and fun game.

The open environments let you tackle problems in any number of ways, which is fantastic for replayability. The suit was awesome, and really helped keep the gameplay fresh. It was just a very, very good game that got attention because of its graphics.

I really wish people would pay more attention to gameplay/story instead of graphics.

I think the game suffered from not exploring it's full potential. It never really give anything to the players to use the suit powers, nor give a good and thorough tutorial in how to use them.
You got this cool powers, but you never really taught how to use them properly in the beginning.

The game missed having a couple of Ravenholm sections, in which the player had to get creatively using the suit and only the suit right in the starting levels. *shrug*

Look, the system wasn't perfect (XP was heavily flawed as well, yet for some reason people prefer it to 2000), I won't try and claim it's flawless. But it's undeniable that a huge number of people put it on computers that simply didn't have the spec to run it, couldn't run it effectively, and concluded that it was the OSs fault. The recommended specs were for 1gb of ram, which at the time was a lot (as 64 bit systems were almost non-existant). At any rate, it's off topic, and crysis suffered from a similar trend, a lot of people got frustrated because the game wouldn't run properly on their set ups and hated the game as a result.
