After watching the Anthony Weiner scandle and the Lebron/D Wade coughing debacle, something hit me: You really cannot fuck up in this world anymore because there are cameras everywhere and the internet is unforgiving.
Think about it: Congressman Weiner accidentally posted pictures of his weiner on Twitter and then, in a panic, lied and said his account was hacked. The thing is, that picture was on the internet and it had spread around all over the place: there was no way he could take it down now. Eventually, he had to admit his guilt. What he did was wrong to begin with, but he could have hidden it had he not made that one mistake.
For those of you who don't follow the NBA, the Miami Heat just lost the Finals in a bizzarely pitiful fashion to the Dallas Mavericks. Game 4 of this series saw Dirk Nowitzki playing his heart out and helping Dallas tie the series; all this despite the fact that he was very sick. People were calling it the greatest illness ridden performance since Michael Jordan's "Flu Game" in the 1997 Finals. Before Game 5, Lebron James and Dwayne Wade were followed around when they headed to the locker room to prepare for the game. They were caught on tape mocking Nowitzki's illness. The Mavs went on to smoke the Heat in Game 5. Now, the utter stupidity of mocking the guy after he had just beaten you is a topic that could take up a whole thread by itself, but that isn't the point. The point is that there were cameras following them around during the simple event of walking to the locker room. That's just silly.
But that underscores something rather interesting. Obviously there will be cameras and the like following politicians and athletes, but regular people have made these same kind of mistakes and paid for them in one way or another. You cannot fuck up in this world, or your secrets will be all over the place. Every cellphone has a camera and Twitter can be reached with the simple push of a button.
Are we getting to the point that we may not be able to make jokes away from watching eyes or have screts like Weiner's (not that we should to begin with) without it showing up on the web or elsewhere? Will we not be able to make mistakes anymore?
