I am a handheld gamer primarily, and with the courses I'm taking, having something to do on my breaks is key. I have just enjoyed Suikoden 2 for the past few weeks, and as such, I need something new. Here's the problem...

There's barely anything new and interesting on both the Vita and 3DS to enjoy at the moment. I've flipped through both store fronts, found pretty much nothing except for Midnight Club L.A. Remix on sale for $5. I like the game too, so, it might be my best option. I dunno... There's nothing really good going on.

So, I wanna know what you guys think I should do. Got any good handheld games I might not have tried? Maybe a suggestion to re-play some old games instead? I have Klonoa cued up for that if such is the case. What would you do in my situation? Any ideas will do!

Side note: Is Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 any good? I've seen gameplay, and it looks waaaayyyyy too Japan for me, even when JRPGs are my fave genre of game. It's on sale for $6, so... Just some side thoughts will do~

EDIT: Ok, this might be necessary. I've done all of the commonplace hitters from both handhelds. Pokemon Y, Bravely Default, Person 4 Golden, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem Awakening, Monster Hunter, etc. If it's big named and highly regarded as a top dog on its system, I have probably touched it or beat it. This might make things harder for suggestions.

Don't hold back, regardless!

Be sure the Nep Nep game you mentioned is the one you think it is. It has action spin-offs, and considering how absurd every game in the franchise is with subtitles, it's hard to tell which one's which.

I suggest Fire Emblem: Awakening, Bravely Default and Persona 4 Golden. You've probably played all these already though. Make sure to get Xenoblade Chronicles if you have a New 3DS.

If you're into visual novel-like games (which is next door from JRPGs in the game genre spectrum), I highly recommend Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Virtue's Last Reward (AKA Zero Escape 1 & 2).

Nice avatar by the way.

Another Code has a striking cel-shaded art style and I've heard good things about it.

Tembo the Badass Elephant is coming out in a few days and looks friggin awesome (game play vids are looks fly). I'd suggest that.

I also have a pretty extensive Vita catalogue if you were looking for new handhelds

Have you played Ghost Trick? If not, GO PLAY GHOST TRICK!
It has one of the most well put together stories I've seen in a game, and some unique gameplay too.
Need more convincing?

I'd ask if you have a backlog, but that's a dumb question because everyone has a backlog.

Go play your backlog.
My backlog consists of a single game. And it's an RPG. A genre I'm hoping to take a small break from >_<

I won't recommend any Atelier games then, unless you're really in the mood for crafting. (Fun games though, certainly worth trying one if you haven't.)

So, he, ever played Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes? It's an extremely fun turn-based strategic puzzle game with some RPG elements. Good for 30+ hours of entertainment. The DS version can be found for bargain prices.

Hmm, played Ghost Trick, eh? Good man.
The only other recommendations I can make are:

Disgaea DS - Fun story, good gameplay, insane level cap (9999), and perfect for a handheld. It's easy to spend over a hundred hours playing this game and working your way up to fight the completely insane Uber bosses. I find Disgaea games are such a perfect fit for handhelds because when I'm doing a bunch of grinding* I like to be able to move around as well. There's also the psp version Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness, but that one lacks the prinny commentary and convenient map on the top screen, though it does have voice acting and supposedly better graphics. Also there's a port of Disgaea 2 on the psp, unfortunately none for the DS/3DS.
*I say grinding, but it's actually pretty fun, it's not like the completely mindless grinds of a lot of JRPGs, the item world allows for constant challenge so there is still strategy to consider.

Elite Beat Agents - A quirky rhythm game that is genuinely really funny. I can't think of too much to say about it, but it is really quite good.

The World Ends With You - Interesting story about people being forced to play the Reaper's Game with their lives at stake. Well written with some decent characters and plot twists. Unique action RPG gameplay making good use of the stylus. Get's a bit tricky controlling two different characters with two different control schemes, but fun regardless. Also, unique for a JRPG, not insanely padded, no random encounters and the game is just as long as it needs to be. If you haven't played this one, you should.

If by 'Japan' you mean copious levels of fanservice, then there isnt actually that much.

Also id say getting it for $6 is a steal.

I had to ask myself the question "Would I be embarrassed if someone looked over my shoulder to see some of the stuff in this game?" My answer was yes, haha. It looks interesting I guess, but maybe not my cup of tea in the gameplay department. I'm sure it's great stuff regardless!

If you have a tablet get yourself Galaxy Trucker. There's also a phone version but I don't know how good that is. On a phone you could also try the cave shooters (Dodonpachi Resurrection, Espgaluda II and Bug Princess 2 are all good places to start). There's also To Be or Not to be which is outstanding.

As for 3DS/Vita (compatible) games it depends what you consider obscure really. Spelunky and Binding of Isaac are both excellent as is Thomas was Alone. You played Half Minute Hero? That's also excellent (JRPG technically but not really).

Have you played Persona Q? I found that to be incredibly enjoyable. I was fortunate enough to find the Nintendo DS version of Crono trigger at a thrift store for £10 so I have been playing that. I must say that my Nintendo 3DS is seeing more use than my PS4 at the minute, but that will probably change when Star Wars: Battlefront and Assassins Creed syndicate are released.

Hero Academy
Cthulhu Saves the World
Penny Arcade: On The Rainslick Precipice of Darkness 3
AdVenture Capitalist

Five Nights at Freddy's (all 3 are good, but I have a favorite)
Rebuild 2

3DS games + downloadable/backwards compatables:

Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Super Smash Bros. (I'm assuming you HAVE to have that already)
Final Fantasy Tactics A2
Elite Beat Agents + Rythem Heaven
N+ (N++ is coming soon)
Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons + Ages (GBC games that have seasoned like fine wine)

...any help?

I just have a n3ds (Well , I'm down to my 3ds until I get the n3ds screen fixed*Sigh*), so my list will largely be of games compatible with it.

Shantae and the Pirate's curse
Senran Kagura in general. I think there's more vita installments than 3ds. Burst is on 3ds, and a sequel is coming soon.
Final Fantasy tactics A2
Fire Emblem Awakening
Scribblenauts in general
samurai Warriors Chronicles
samurai Warriors chronicles 3
Pokemon Shuffle
pokemon rumble World
tomodachi Life
Any pokemon game
Animal Crossing new Leaf if you have the time to dedicate to it.
Sims Pets 3
Civilization revolution
Style Savvy trendsetters
lego batman 3
rune factory 4
Project X Zone
Migty switch Force in general
Fantasy Life
Kersploosh
Starship defense
Xenoblade Chronicle if you have a New 3ds.
Monster hunter in general
Smash bros

That's about all I can think of. If there's questions, I'll answer as best I can.

OK, so in 2016 Zero Escape 3 is to be released. Zero Escape is a series of games that are basically semi-linear visual novels with puzzles and with stories that are, basically, about really interesting experiments with time, space, psychology and different theories.

Why am I typing this? Because You can play part one called 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors, or 999 for short (for Nintendo 3DS, I think) and part two called Virtues Last Reward (for 3DS and PSVita, but preferably for Vita).

P.S. You don't actually NEED to play 999 to enjoy VLR, but a) it has a few characters from 999 and has many refferences to it; b) It IS a good game.

The Neptunia Re;Birth games are really good in the "more than just the Japanese equivalent to Video Games: The Video Game" way from the story perspective...

Other than that, all my suggestions were mentioned already in some way, shape, or form... except Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, unless you have played that game before outside of its demo, of course...
