No, Noomi Rapace Will *Not* Be Returning for Alien: Covenant

No word yet on whether the fate of her character, Elizabeth Shaw, will be revealed or not.

As it stands, we know next to nothing about Ridley Scott's planned Prometheus sequel/Alien prequel, Alien: Covenant, other than that it will have a "hard R rating." [http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/alien-covenant-rating-r-2996808] If you were to guess which previous Alien/Prometheus characters would be most likely to return in Covenant, however, one would imagine that Noomi Rapace's archeologist, Elizabeth Shaw, would be at the top of that list.

It would be a sensible prediction rooted in sound logic, being that Shaw was the only human left standing at the end of Prometheus, and therefore, the perfect character to connect the two films. As it just so happens, it would also be a wrong one.

In an interview with The Daily Mail [http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3422086/BAZ-BAMIGBOYE-Helen-McRory-dives-deep-end-love-cheat.html] published over the weekend, Scott dropped a bit of a bombshell by revealing that Rapace would not be returning as Shaw, adding that "We're still casting the main roles."

This means that Michael Fassbender's devious android, David, will be the only character from Prometheus set to return (in what will apparently be a double role for Fassbender). We also know that Katherine Waterston has been cast in the film, although her role has yet to be specified.

Ever since scoring a Golden Globe award for Best Director last month, Scott has been promising to deliver something "much worse" than the iconic chestburster scene in the original Alien -- a promise that many felt he already delivered on with Shaw's alien abortion scene in Prometheus -- so with Rapace now out of the mix, one has to imagine that Waterson's character might be on the short list of those who meet a grisly demise in Covenant. Let's hope that Scott is able to craft a better movie around said scene this time around, in any case.

The official synopsis for Alien: Covenant is below.

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with ALIEN: COVENANT, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PROMETHEUS - and connects directly to Scott's 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world - whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

I'm wondering if perhaps it had something to do with the writing? Both the writers on Prometheus didn't seem to have a whole lot of anything good on their resume, even Damon Lindelof only had the Star Trek reboot which was okayish and the execrable Cowboy's Versus Aliens before Prometheus. Though, he co-created Lost too apparently, which I can't really comment on having never seen it.

Prometheus is a great, visual movie, you know, to watch without the dialogue. :/

Reading that short summary I somehow I doubt that Scotts strike with The Martian will turn into a run...

Huh, if true that's a shame. I thought Prometheus was something close to awful, but I always felt the ending potentially queued up a far more interesting and quirky story that I really did want to see.

I'm so glad. I hated her character. The only great character in Prometheus was Meredith Vickers. David was good. Everyone else was garbage.

As someone who actually enjoyed Prometheus, I don't know how I feel about this. But if they're going to bring back any character, David would be the one to bring. I am just wondering how exactly this synopsis is going to follow the ending of the last movie.

Shaw wasn't a great character, but I would have liked to at least have some closure with her fate. Unless they pull a Planet of the Apes and just kill her offscreen in between movies like they did to James Franco.

You know something? I'd watch a movie where David just subtly murdered an entire crew through his psychopathic actions, like implying that there's an alien killer out there but really he's just engineering all of these events. Which, in a way, was exactly what happened in Prometheus.

I mean, I guess I'd prefer an alien up to no good on it's own, what with it being an Alien movie and all, but I thought he was very entertaining in Prometheus. hell, the movie was visually stunning, and a fun ride. After my brain switched off, that is.

I mean, if they really had sent a crew of completely competent people to that planet, it would have been as boring as piss. Better to make a few of them chuckleheads, so the madness can kick off!

I let myself get swept up in the mystery and existential horror of Prometheus, but I was left pissed that we didn't get more closure on the various half-realized concepts teased in the film. If Rapace doesn't return to reprise her character, that tells me that a lot of unanswered questions I had will remain unanswered, which is a huge bummer.

*laughs* ...I don't get it! Is this some sort of meta-mystery that only the Covenant can answer in full or something?

Other than that, who else would relay the vast wisdom from the Prometheus School of Running Away From Things? David??

Didn't see Prometheus, have no intention of seeing this. So don't really care if she's in it or not. Personally I hope she isn't, as she seems like a decent actress. Better to cut any ties to this cinematic disaster as early as she can.
