I started gaming a hell of a long time ago. And I don't think it's a lie to say that things were vastly different back then.

You see, back then, we were all united by the hobby. We could like some games more than others, but we respected each other's tastes, and were willing to try new things.

Nowadays, I am confused by what I see. There is no more "I like this AND that", today, it's "I like this OR that". And it confuses the hell out of me. I like Halo. I like Call of Duty. I like Killzone, and Resistance. I like Medal of Honor. And I like Battlefield. But seeing these legions of fanboys out there calling each other names and acting like they left their one brain cell in a storage shed somewhere, I am forced to wonder: where did we, as a community, go wrong?

It happens in Religion, it Happens in Politics, and it happens in Sports.

We just like to have a side of our own. I love all those series (though not every game in them tbh) but there are plenty of people who just want to stick to one game.

Just the way it is.

It does make me sad.

I like Halo, Call of Duty(4 at least... wasn't better then 2, but nothing was). System Shock 2, Cooking Mama, Warioware Smooth Moves, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Fallout(1+2 and 3, despite my bitching about it), Half Life 2, Assassin's Creed, Rock Band, Kirby, the occasional JRPG, and plenty of other games in various genre's.

I guess with the advent of the internet, we realized there's more of us then we thought, which lessened the "we need to stick together no matter what" mentality back in the day. Since there's so many of us, we don't have much to do except ***** each other out.

We could come together for good causes, like showing the world we're not really pricks, that we're really not that bad. But I guess flame-wars are more important.

Its the way it always and forever will be. Even on the Escapist, I remember there was a time when an Escapist was free to make his own way in the world, but our time....is coming to an end!

I thought this was going to be a topic on the fact that there hasn't been a year yet where there wasn't a war somewhere

Personally I could care less about fanboyism because someone else's opinion of a game that I like doesn't really effect me.

People just like to justify their likes and prove that they are "right" and other people are "wrong for liking or not liking a specific game or genre...... Also people like to argue because its fun to troll and get people riled up.

EDIT: also there have been fanboy's since nintendo and sega first came out with competing systems...... I don't think the amount of fanboyism has risen drastically.... just now we have the internet to share our fanboyism very easily. Unlike the 90's when internet was more limited. Fanboy's where still around but instead of a argument online it was an argument of sonic vs mario at the lunch table

OMG Metr01d b3tt3r wh3n h3 a m4n!!!!!!!!!1!!1!1111!!!!!

People grab on to whatever they believe in and hold onto it like it's the last raft on the sinking ship. As evidenced by the above statement.

Fanboys are annoying. I have to deal with a friend of mine who just hates the PS series because they're different. He was "raised on Nintendo" as he says. The Gamecube was m first system too, sure. I tell him to grow up constantly. He doesn't. Some people are so entrenched that they'll build little bunkers out of their own fanboyish tendencies and never leave.

Where did we go wrong? Easy we let humans into the clubhouse.

There has always been the "OR" issue, Nintendo OR Sega, Nintendo OR Playstation, Home system OR Arcade. This shows up as soon as there is a choice to be made.

Fanboyism is not growing in percent but in number of gamers and how easy it is to scream to the world that your game is the best. The Internet made a safe place for fanboys to go without fear of us beating them up, and to be beaten up by a gamer is not good for ones ego.

Also Duck Hunt is the best FPS EVeR!
