Labyrinth. David Bowie + Jim Henson = Peanut Butter and Chocolate.

What about Muppets Christmas Carol? Not just the best film of the original story but one of the best films ever. Just sayin...

First off, Dark Crystal. YES!
Secondly, I'll have to look up that original cut. If anyone has a link that'd be awesome.
Thirdly, Chris's final word completely true. That was actually Peter Jackson's motto in the making of the Lord of the Rings... ie "If it can be done with practical effects, it should". Which is why many people (myself included) feel that the Lord of the Rings looks so much better than the Hobbit. Much more practical effects rather than CG
I mostly agree with this, and in 99% of any case it will look better when its real...however...have you seen the scene when the Uruk-hai are running from the hilltop towards the horn? That looks pretty bad. Because the Uruk-hai are guys in HEAVY make-up and difficult to see through helmets. Their careful tripping down the stairs...looks pretty pathetic for the fearsome Uruks :p

So...sometimes CG can be better...but in most cases I absolutely agree. Thank god for CH though...the action spectacles of the Marvel movies of today really wouldnt be the same without the effects...

You're correct that it's an awesome movie, but it came out in 1992 dedicated to Jim Henson who died in 1990. The movie was directed by his son Brian Henson.

Christmas Carol is an adaptation of an existing work, and I wonder if they were thinking of original stories/properties for this. I agree that the Muppet Christmas Carol is one of the best the Henson company has made, and is actually my favorite version of that story. Dark Crystal gets my vote from the two discussed, mostly because I'm the DM in my gaming group and the level of world building on display in that movie is just staggering.

My personal favorite Jim Henson creation was the sci-fi show Farscape. Didn't run during his time and sadly he didn't get to see it but it was what Jim had been wanting to do before his death. It's quite possibly my favorite science fiction series of all time(tied with Babylon 5).
