I only shot two of the police officers who happened to be among the civilians, other than that i didn't fire at a single person until the special forces arrived. I have to say, although i was kinda prepared through the media / forum discussions i still had a queasy (i hope thats the right word) feeling walking through the halls.

In retrospective i don't think that scene is much worse than what can be seen in some oppressive movie scenes. It didn't do much good on the video game controversy since it undermines two of the arguments against the critics: that shooting of civilians isn't possible or at least encouraged, and that scenes in video games do not resemble those in actual amok runs (and therefore cannot be the blueprint for them).

The german version of the game ends when you shoot a civilian in that scene. It doesn't make much sense, but it's one of the rare cases where i could live with (that kind of) censorship; although i bought the UK import nonetheless.

I sprayed n' prayed laughed my way through the first part of the level, taking the time to "mercy"-kill anyone I saw and knifing anyone stupid enough to come close. Felt somewhat meh though, the only really interesting part of that level is the ending, felt like a slap in the face (the good kind, if there is such a thing).

An awful lot of people seem to be saying "LOL it's only a game I murdered everyone and wanked off at the same time."

I mean, I guess I see what you're trying to do. You think being desensitized to it will make you seem more mature.

Frankly I think reveling in or dismissing the violence doesn't really vindicate the game the way you think it does. It's kind of just like you're shitting on the artistic statement Infinity Ward was trying to make about the reality of terrorism. I think the real appropriate response is not to go to town on the civilians or even look for ways to take down the terrorists, but simply to acknowledge and respect what the sequence is trying to evoke. They put it in to make you think.

I kept wishing I could run for the entire level...otherwise I just held the trigger down until they all went away.

I shot a few civilians the first time but due to being kinda stuck behind the other terrorists and using a machine gun i hit one them in the back with a few stray bullets. Then a other terrorist turned round and introduced the back of his gun to my face instantly killing me.

Second time round i moved round the group and killed anybody who were left slow dieing putting them out of their misery. Also i blew away any cops that i spotted but that is more down to my problem with authority

I did what i do in every game, kill pixels with other pixels.
Was slightly annoying though that you can only move around with a slow walk, the other terrorists usually get most of the civvies before i can mop up (no pun intended you sick, sick people) the rest.

the only thing that shocked me was the fact it WOULD NOT let you run while gunning down the civies.

the terrorists you're with are irritating too - when i played it through on verteran i got killed about 4 times by my own team. i'd be standing slightly in front and to the right of one of them, a civ would run out of cover in front of me and the terrorist would just blow me away trying to get the squishy bag of organs running for its life.

other then that its not really an OH MY GOD THIS IS HORRIFIC KILLING UNARMED CIVILIANS thing. some of the people your blowing away have guns and you dont even have to shoot anyone.

The level would have had more impact if I didn't know it was going to be there.

I iced everyone I could then I took a handgun from a dead mall cop and went back and executed the stupid ones that dodged my first assault. Then I quietly sat in the lift only to run out and unleash more death!

I started shooting before everyone and killed anyone I saw.

Here's my thinking: They where going to be killed anyway, I just made sure their deaths meant something by me getting closer to Makarov.

I loved that mission! Finally, i could pay back those useless buggers for getting in my way and NOT be penalized for it! Riot police were a pain tho.

I don't get it, I haven't played it, but what's the big deal?

In Splinter Cell: Double Agent you're asked to execute someone, yet I don't remember such a fuss about that. Especially since the 1 on 1 aspect is arguably on a more personal level.

I did mass murder.
This level is utterly weak, surviving only on the shock factor of idiots who think something of it. GTA, Saints Row, and any other sandbox-crime game has you doing worse.
Then there's Prototype. Not only do you mass murder innocents who are scampering for their lives, you can dismember them in a number of ways and directions. Plus you consume people's bodies and fly by shooting blood out of your wrists.
No Russian is no big deal.
