I see topics on whether or not you have played the level but I'm interested in what you did when you played it. Step by step how you reacted to playing the level.

MY EXPERIENCE
I didn't shot at all. I looked around, quite shocked, waiting for someone to ask me why I wasn't shooting. By the time when went down to the ground level I shot at some guy who was crawling away. It was a instinctive reaction from playing too many FPS games but the shot didn't kill him, so I stopped firing.

When the police arrived I tried to shoot the terrorists in the back. I was killed instantly. Upon restarting I noticed the police managed to kill a few of terrorists so I waited until there was only a couple left and tried to shoot them in the back again. I died instantly again. I tried to run back into the building and shot them from inside but I was killed again (I realised I might have some explosives strapped to me). So I just completed the mission as it was laid out.

I have to say, because my way of playing the level wasn't allowed, I felt a little manipulated. But it was very affective. I hadn't felt that disturbed playing a game since the first time I saw Sub-Zero rip off a head with the spine still attached.

So what did you do? Shoot and love it? Hide in a corner? Not shoot at all? Not judging, it is just a game, but it's interesting to see how people react to it. And how they contextualise what they're doing.

EDIT:

I'm kind of surprised at the people who got quite defensive about this or felt the need to put down my personal response. So what if I'm little more sensitive than others and found the level shocking? Doesn't the argument "It's just a game" also cover me as "I'm just a delicate little flower, (or sensitive prick), who empathizes with things too much?" I've been playing video games all my life. I totally support them. I only wanted to discuss them and our responses to them.

Empathy is what brings us closer to other understanding feelings of other people/things. Without it MW2 is really 'just a game' and the story will have no impact on the human player. Some people can only empathize with things that are very close to them (i.e. family and friends); others can empathize with strangers and animals or people who don't share their values. I guess if you felt nothing shooting civilians then it stirred the same emotions in you as playing Tetris? So it truly was just a game to you and all of Infinity Ward's efforts to further storytelling in games failed (in those instances).

Thanks to those who responded with their experience (without judging mine). Very interesting.

Seeing as I don't have the game and never will, my answer is: I didn't.
But I am still posting here to say this:
What is the big deal with that level? I mean, you don't do anything there you haven't already done in every GTA and Saints Row game. If you have played Postal 2 you have done much much worse.
So if I did play that level, I would shoot everything in sight.

I suppose I can relate.
Me? I didn't shot at all. I think I shot two people who were left from the overall carnage, and some of the mall cops. Then when the SWAT busted in I just went right into it.
Second time through, though? Yeah, I shot everyone. I just went "Fuck it" and went nuts.

I'm sure that there's been at least five of these topics already though, but I haven't posted in one yet.

I killed everything.

It's still a game. Nothing has changed in the last few weeks. I still didn't find it quite as fun as nuking all the innocents in Megaton, but I think it's because that was more cinematic.

So you left a little pixelated dude to bleed to death, slowly and painfully, instead of finishing him off quickly and cleanly? Nice, good to know you're a little sadist.

OK, new question, why are people so moral about this? You can't claim that video games don't affect people if you let them affect you - if people can't get over this, then the people who say this kind of stuff encourage violence win.

To me, it was just a level. I understood the impact it was to have on the player, but I also recognised it was just a level, in a game, which is virtual.

The media has blown this out of proportion. Yes, its not something nice to happen to anyone, but, if you dont want to play it, it gives you more than ample opportunity NOT to play it.

That level was fun as! I happily gunned down as many civilians as I could. So what if they're unarmed civilians, the point of the game was to fit in with Makarov and take some people down, and it was good fun to do! I liked the slowness of the movement, it gave a really casual feeling to mowing down those people. It was a good level, I didn't mind it in the slightest.

I think it's the level of realism in the reaction of those being shot. In GTA people often make jokes or run away or your character says something over-the-top that undercuts what?s happening. In MW2 people beg for their lives or try to pull away bodies of family/friends/strangers or try to protect survivors but then get shot in the head for trying to help. You're also hit with a horrible sinking feeling that it might inspire something in real life in future.

I guess that makes me sort of a psychopath then, because they didn't even need to ask me to start shooting, instinctive reaction I guess...

I enjoyed the freedom to just nail civilians at will; it was a potent mixture of liberation and disgust. I think it's the authenticity of the scene that makes it so evocative, particularly the look of blood curdling fear and bemusement on the faces of the security guards at the beginning - before you start shooting. I think that any game that manages to be genuinely evocative like that deserves credit; saying that, it would get old quite quickly if other games simply rip it off.

I don't see what the fuss is about. At the very beginning of the game, there's an UNSKIPPABLE panel, which asks if you want to play the disturbing missions, yes or no.
If playing it was mandatory, it could be a controversy, but it isn't.

I shot everyone.

I GUNNED DOWN EVERYONE I SAW!!!

not because I loved blood shed but because the objective was to earn the badguys trust and I thought if I didnt I would fail the mission.

I pretty much went into it guns blazing. There were a few wounded blokes who I found my "Team mates" didn't bother to turn around and finish off, so I discreetly let those people slide hoping for the best, but aside from that rarity I did a lot of the hard work myself, especially when the security officers began pulling pistols things got visceral. When the Internal Forces arrived, the jig was definately up and it wasn't any different from a normal level.

I just sat back and um.... watched the show until the heavy infantry started pouring in.
