No Single Player for Command and Conquer: Generals 2

The reboot of EA's popular modern warfare RTS franchise will focus on e-sports skirmish play.

Fans of Command and Conquer, one of the oldest RTS game franchises, will be aware that there's a new game in the works: Command and Conquer: Generals 2 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/119083-Free-To-Play-Command-and-Conquer-Launching-in-2013]. The initial announcement revealed it would be free-to-play, the first of many other Command and Conquer titles to come. Some further details have been revealed, among them that the game will not have a single player campaign, as the developer intends to focus on multiplayer online skirmish gaming.

Bioware general manager John Van Caneghem says that this is part of an overall strategy intended to "get back to the roots of what made Command & Conquer great." Building zillions of units and blasting foes is what Bioware believes this franchise is all about, and Bioware thinks a story campaign isn't integral to that experience. Multiplayer skirmish is what the developer intends to focus on, both co-op and competitive. This is all part of a plan to turn Command and Conquer into an e-sports series. "I don't think we're making a list of the features yet," says Von Cagenhem, "but I think you can basically make a list of the assumed ones that you'd need to be an e-sports game, and it's definitely part of the plan."

Command and Conquer: Generals 2 will be the first to get the treatment, but other games in the series will follow. "We decided to choose Generals as the first set of games we build under the universe, but we'll be expanding after that, like Tiberium and Red Alert as well as some others as well. But Generals 2 was the first one, and it was one of the biggest sellers, as well as the fanbase has been asking for it for some time."

Hang on a second, I need to step out for a moment.

*steps outside. Cue incoherent and inaudible screaming and swearing*

Did anyone really expect them to actually keep the game even vaguely close to the original franchise?

Names sell, this game has nothing to do with the franchise, don't expect the gameplay you found in the previous games to be featured.

Not to say it can't be good in it's own right, but, this game should basically be considered a far flung spin-off.

Well that was an easy purchase decision, straight to the "no thanks" pile.

Well I guess that means I'm not playing it.
Though that's not just because I mainly play CnC for the single player, but also because when I finally DID try multi-player I found out just how terrible I am at it...

If I want to be terrible at an online RTS I'd just play Starcraft 2 again.

Well. That's one more franchise I'm not likely to ever touch again, then.
Bye C&C, it was fun while it lasted.

Your....... getting rid of campaigns to "get back to the roots of what made Command & Conquer great."

[HEADING=1] Every C&C game had a campaign. Thats not going back! Its trampling over 17 years of the series.[/HEADING]
This is just another kick to the balls. I did some online skirmishes in Generals and it is unbalanced. Maybe if they could handle doing that it would be somewhat better.

This is C&C, not Total Annihilation or even SC2.

This is what made C&C good.

The story, the struggle the cause. The gameplay and cutscenes worked together so well up to about the last of the games.

Bioware, you've no idea what the hell your doing do you? *Shakes head is disbelief"

I guess if it's free I'll try it but I'd still prefer something else...Maybe something with cheesy dialogue and cut-scenes and a bit of plot.

well screw you too EA. what about those of us who don't WANT to have to play with others? I really don't like online matchmaking in rts and I have like 2 friends who might play it.
SP also allows for more crazy bullshit that just wouldn't be fun for other players in MP (the laser drill in SC2 for example) and sometimes I want to try things my friends wouldn't have the patience for (just as I wouldn't have the patience if they did it). Like when I want to steal an enemy's mcv and try a few weird combo's in RA3. like... could I nick a soviet barracks, build some desolators and put them in my ifv's?

let me get back to you on that.

A Command and Conquer game without the ridiculously campy cutscenes is not a Command and Conquer game.

Plus, while I love RTS games, I can only play against NPC's set at the "brain-dead chimpanzee" level. At least then I have a fighting chance. Put me up against people and I get steamrolled within 30 fucking of a match.

So yeah, basically I'm going to pass on this.

I must confess that i have never ever played C&C multiplayer. But at the same time i have played hours up on hours of the single player.

I like to have a purpose. Taking over city, defending a certain part. Freeing a albert einstein. Stuff like that. A little variety instead of just destroying your opponent.

But stil... it's C&C.... and free....

Isn't Generals the one that absofuckinlutely sucked anyway? The one with shittier AI than any previous C&C game and indeed possibly any previous RTT ever?

Y'know, the one no one would've bought anyway?

Captcha: now and forever. Okay captcha, I know I reinstalled Star Control II last night, but this is ridiculous.

A pity, I was actually looking forward to this. I actually kinda liked the 1st Generals, it had a few things neat little details that I liked (destroyed buildings/aircraft can actually hurt things that they fall on ftw!)
