Without outside influence(drugs, electric shock) I give you 3 days before your body starts fighting against you. After that, you're endangering yourself. and eventually your brain will shut you down(make you pass out). If you fight it after that somehow, you're life is now on the line.

Edit: I tried this before, after 3 days I had mild hallucinations and "time skips"(fall asleep and wake up a couple minutes later as if nothing happened)

A whole week. You won't make it. The longest anyone has ever survived was about 10 days. You would be stupid to do it.

My friends bet me $1000 dollars each, I would take these chances for 10 grand.
According to your profile you're 14 years old

If you honestly think your friends will actually cash out on that, mental problems were clearly a pre-existing condition.

Edit: Also, look for new friends.
You've obviously never met my friends. We each have about $10,000-$20,000. I don't think they'll go crazy about 1 grand. Anyways, they know what will happen if they don't cough the money up.

Okay then. Internet lying it is.

Hopefully you'll have enough money to pay for your hospital bills, kid.

And what exactly is your hallucinating, barely functioning ass going to do if they don't pay up? Knock yourself out though, results could be interesting.

Eh, worst comes to worst I'll get kicked from the site.

Best case I'll be part of the overwhelmingly negative responses to this and save a 14 year old's life from his asinine wager.

Just one question, if you clearly didn't plan to taken anyone's advice on this, why did you make a thread? And have these overwhelmingly negative responses even made you doublethink about this a little.

I've only taken intro-courses into psychology, but even I know that sleep deprivation is one of the worst things that can happen to a human body. Which is why its a common form of torture.

Call me a dick, which I am, but I'm hesitant to look at someone who'd whore themselves out for 10 grand (especially since you so clearly aren't in need of the money) as anything but someone to look at with a mixed sense of pity and disgust.

Edit: Also, if you're hardheaded enough to try this, get a trusted adult to watch over you. I mean, we've just passed winter. Get some summer sun. Its very cold in the morgue.

As an insomniac (chronic) I can go months without sleep, it's not fun, it hurts and the walls seem to go all funny! Missing a night of sleep for a games marathon... GOOD, missing 47 night's sleep and watching everything in slow motion... BAD.
Most insomniacs sleep more than they claim, and they also have naps and micronaps (micronaps often they aren't even aware of)
I know, I had to go to a sleep clinic where they monitored my brain activity, they worked out that out of 24 hour I would get 35 minutes worth of micronaps. What happens is the brain shuts down non essential activity which is (as the Dr put it) allowing it to refresh its self in the absence of real sleep, you just don't know when it's happening and it really doesn't do what a good nights sleep will do.

No, please don't do this! No amount of money is worth taking to ruin your health.

It makes me feel sad when a fellow Escapist is hurting themselves for silly reasons.

You don't want to make me feel sad, do you?

I don't like to be sad, I like to be happy, and happy people get a good night's rest. So please, stop this at once, and get some sleep!

Please [sub]please[/sub] [sub][sub]please[/sub][/sub] [sub][sub][sub]please[/sub][/sub][/sub] [sub][sub][sub][sub]please[/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub] [sub][sub][sub][sub][sub]please[/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub] [sub][sub][sub][sub][sub][sub]please[/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub] [sub][sub][sub][sub][sub][sub][sub]please[/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub] [sub][sub][sub][sub][sub][sub][sub].......[/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub]

.....

Um. I.. I love you!

OT: I have gone without sleep for about 30 hours and felt like a fried potato. Worst feeling one can have, and the after effects of the change in brain chemistry is hazardous to the brain.

My sleep pattern isn't consistent and has been this way for about a year. It did a number on my short-term memory, but I'm working on changing that.

Mr. Griffstar, you may not change your mind after reading the thread over, but I must know if you feel this is worth doing.

There are alternatives to this that are acceptable fare in terms of being accepted as growth as a sociable factor. Have you considered other bets you and your friends can test?

Is it worth damaging your body and mind for the sake of money, when you can choose a positive endeavor that you and your friends can partake in and enjoy instead? Perhaps one that doesn't impact your psyche and physical embodiment negatively?

If you do change your mind, tell your friends the bet is off, and show this thread as justification for the decision. I trust your friends are mature enough to handle a mild rejection.

It is, in fact, very dangerous.
When your brain has been awake and running for 48-72 hours, there is a chance of going insane. Like proper insane, your mind stops working properly forever.
Don't do it.

After a full seven days of not sleeping, the subconscious mind will slowly mix with your main consciousness. This will make your dreams become a reality and have a very high chance of causing permanent brain damage as well as mental and physical damage. Also, with the lack of sleep your mind will slowly deteriorate and as such you have a chance of dying.
Citation needed.

The world record's 11 days I believe, I think it's like putting your face in a basin of water, in that try as hard as you may you'll not manage to drown yourself willingly.
http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/exchange/node/1690
This is where I read some of what I did about sleep deprivation. I do not remember where I found other information.
No mention of permanent brain damage nor death (beyond the obvious "I thought the car was a puppy" kind of death"

Which is the important point. I'm getting a "Yeah. I am on a drug. it's called Sleep Dep. It?s not available because if you try it once, you will die. Your face will melt off and your children will weep over your exploded body."
Death is not always going to happen. There are permanent impairments though. It seems common sense to me. Without sleep, your body cannot heal itself like it does in sleep. Your brain will slowly deteriorate because it will always be active. I'll continue looking for where I found the info on the damage though. I found it somewhere before, maybe a book in the library.
But it's not a "Do not do this you will die!" thing. People do live through it. If you are willing, then it's your choice if you go for it or not.
I really can't find anything remotely scientific concerning permanent brain damage or death caused by a single bout of sleeplessness. I can find things on increased arterial failure from hardeningand heart disease caused by a lack of sleep, but that's an effect over a long time of little sleep.
It's not going to be labeled as death from lack of sleep. The lack of sleep causes other things to happen. Sort of like how no one really dies from old age. It's a similar concept. In older age, things begin to shut down.

Fie to all of the negative posters! Sleep is a completely optional part of life! Not only have I not slept in two months, I'm completely alert! In fact, I'm even more alert than everyone I know! I've started to see colors that they don't even know to exist!
One question.

Are you an android or robot? Or are you just joking, as internet sarcasm is hard to detect these days.

Warning - DO NOT DO IT, seriously I have pulled a full week allnighter and I was almost constantly almost falling asleep - I fell asleep the 8th day in class and the teacher didn't even notice, not to mention I was in the front row. And yes, particulary in high school it is not good - Your brain takes the time you sleep at night to register and create new memories for the things you have learnt that day - REM sleep. So, delaying it is never a good idea, I have to repeat an extra year of Mathematics because I kept falling asleep in class.
