What a poor year for gaming it has been.

My top three games are Gran Turismo 5, Heavy Rain and Dark Void. None of which really deserve that spot had anything great come out this year.

Out of that list, I say give it to either New Vegas or Kirby. Both amazing games and my two favorites of the year. Their choice though.

Probably will be RDR or ME2. Which I don't think deserve it that much. Marston came off as a prick(although I guess for good reason, but still, I don't like pricks) and the story felt disjointed. And ME2 didn't really advance the plot at all.

Just my opinion though.
while i haven't played rdr and therefore my opinion isn't worth dirt; however i agree with me2 in that, even though there were two discs, it felt like half the game me1 was; also the music was terrible. out with the great techno sci-fi music and in with the generic epic action music.

as for my top choice: a tie between new vegas (dead money in particular), halo reach, and epic yarn.

Man, you KNOW its been a shitty year when Mass Effect 2 make the list of best games. Wow...just wow. This single game is pretty much a betrayal of everything that Bioware used to stand for, and consequently, a betrayal of their fans.

Wait, are you saying Mass Effect had music? Wow, that's news to me. I didn't even notice Mass Effect's soundtrack in all but one or two areas. When I found it on Youtube, I thought it was incredibly generic sounding and not at all memorable.

Mass Effect 2, for me, was a great improvement. I thought the music was awesome and still listen to most of the character leitmotifs on youtube sometimes. It pales in comparison to stuff like Halo or Homeworld, but it's still damn good.

Really though, if you want to hear an electronic soundtrack done right, listen to Tron: Legacy's OST.

OT: That's a good list. I can tell it's been a great year for gaming, with a whole bunch of games all appealing to different people - just look at all the variety in the GotY lists on the internet so far, few of them are the same. Hell, look at all the argument on this thread. I'm glad to see Reach and Mass Effect 2 on that list, certainly.

If we should go by epic scale and he sheer awesomeness of a game, it can only be one winner:

StarCraft2: Wings of Liberty.

None of the other games on that list comes even close to being as well designed as SC2 is.

Not one of the them are on my personal top 10 for 2010. Having played every singel one of them except WOW i must say 2010 will be known gaming wise to me as a year with a general lack of imagination. Boooorrrring..next please.

what were you smoking while you were playing this? because you clearly weren't playing the same game as the rest of us.

Too bad stellar hits like Amnesia and Super Meat Boy were ignored in favor of trite garbage like Heavy Rain and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood.
Agreed.

I am particularly insulted that Kirby's Epic Yawn is on this when Super Meat Boy isn't. Heck, KEY was to me just the third best platformer on the Wii (behind Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Donkey Kong Country Returns).

Maybe it was the ridiculous railroading plot that pretty much took what was good about the first game and pissed all over it. Then again it might have been the boring, rinse-repeat gun fights that tried and failed to be like every 3rd person shooter ever. Then again maybe it was the gutting of any semblance of depth from the leveling system, which loops around to my first point. I could go on.

All I've got to say is, if that's what is nominated for GOTY, what a dissapointment (in the year, i mean) :(

95% of those titles are sequels, the only new IP being Heavy Rain. I consider RDR a spiritual successor to GTA, seeing as they haven't changed a thing outside of bizonker driving physics.

Damn you innovative stagnation!!

I think you are confusing well designed with well budgeted, honestly blizzard are some of the worst designers in the industry. (I'm looking at you rogues and warlocks!)

Proper balance is virtually non-existent in their games, even the so called balance of SC1 seems to me to be more of a fluke than proper design balance.

My votes are for Civ 5, F:NV, RDR and ME2. Can't really explain why. Those were my top 4 timesinks of the year. If I would have to choose just one it would probably be Civ 5, altough ME2 cam really really close.

Actually, RDR is a sequal to a ps2 game from the mid 2000's called "Red Dead Revolver". RDR was pretty much just Red Dead Revolver mixed with GTA.

No indie games this year? Ouch, that's fairly narrow minded, but when you have a list populated with sequels and spin-offs I guess you could say 2010 was the year when originality truly died in the gaming industry. Thank God FFXIII didn't make it on the list.
But then again I would choose Super Meat Boy as the best game of the year. Very well made with bundles of creativity and the perfect challenge level out of any game I've ever played, and at the original 33% off price it's absurdly cheap. Don't get me wrong, New Vegas and ME2 I loved, but I'm going to forget about them when the next instalment comes along due to how these games feel like the glue that sticks a franchise together and not individual games in themselves.

I like how, with the exception of Red Dead Redemption, all of the games were sequels.
