Hello, I was wondering if anyone could recommend me some RPG games that aren't based in a fantasy universe. I really don't like the whole high fantasy elf-dwarf-troll thing and it's hard for me to get into an RPG with that theme. I loved Fallout 3, Stalker, Mass Effect and even games like Bastion that are fantastic but not that traditional Tolkien-esque fantasy landscape.

Are there any great science-fiction or real-world RPGs that I should take a look at? Thanks!

Sounds that you like action rpgs, so i'll advise Vampire:Bloodlines. Deus Ex and System Shock 2 also have rpg elements to them.
Yes these but add the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games and The Persona games ...

I've heard a lot about Vampire: Bloodlines so I might pick it up. What's the general gist of it?

Also an easy way to pick up System Shock 2 would be great? I'm not sure where I could track a copy down. Is it easily available on amazon or whatever?

The Mother series is set in modern times, although it's... Bizarre is an understatement.

He already mentioned the STALKER games and i don't play jrpgs, myself.
The Persona games are actually quite good as far as JRPGs go... I don't typically like JRPGs either... actually the only one I count as actually being really good is FF12 because it has an awesome leveling system and basically steals the KoToR combat system(which I would recommend too)... but the Persona games are really one of a kind games...<.<

It's like Deus Ex only more dialogue heavy and set in an alternate modern world as part of 'The Masquerade' game setting. You start the game as a freshly 'born' vampire of your choosing, there being a number of unique and distinctive types to choose from each of which brings its own take to the dialogue and story, and continuing forward along a semi linear plot from there free to explore and make alliances with the cast of characters as you please.

RPS described it as a dark and brooding rpg soap opera of sorts in the absolute best way possible, and I agree. It's one of the few games where the focus is less on the action and more on the characters you'll meet and interact with. That's also why some of the mid-game action sequences stand out so much, but I personally feel it suits the tone of the game even if it can be frustrating if you built your character till that point as more of a talker and so are at a disadvantage in the fights.

Very good game. You might also want to look into Alpha Protocol which is the closest a game in the last few years has come to copying Vampires formula, warts and all unfortunately. Both games have dismal combat along with bugs and glitches aplenty, only Vampires got a slew of patches both official and fan made to fix that whereas AP doesn't unfortunately. Pity, lots of potential there!

Well its still a medieval setting but its NON fantasy, Mount and Blade.

If you can get adept at the movement on horseback its quite an enjoyable game.

Yeah that's definitely not the Tolkien-style fantasy, all right.

It's sci-fi... kind of... not really, sort of... but with magic songs and time traveling insects and psychic children.

It IS good though.

Ignore the hyperbolic bad things people said about it and play Alpha Protocol (an espionage RPG).
