I've heard a lot about Vampire: Bloodlines so I might pick it up. What's the general gist of it?
It's like Deus Ex only more dialogue heavy and set in an alternate modern world as part of 'The Masquerade' game setting. You start the game as a freshly 'born' vampire of your choosing, there being a number of unique and distinctive types to choose from each of which brings its own take to the dialogue and story, and continuing forward along a semi linear plot from there free to explore and make alliances with the cast of characters as you please.
RPS described it as a dark and brooding rpg soap opera of sorts in the absolute best way possible, and I agree. It's one of the few games where the focus is less on the action and more on the characters you'll meet and interact with. That's also why some of the mid-game action sequences stand out so much, but I personally feel it suits the tone of the game even if it can be frustrating if you built your character till that point as more of a talker and so are at a disadvantage in the fights.
Very good game. You might also want to look into Alpha Protocol which is the closest a game in the last few years has come to copying Vampires formula, warts and all unfortunately. Both games have dismal combat along with bugs and glitches aplenty, only Vampires got a slew of patches both official and fan made to fix that whereas AP doesn't unfortunately. Pity, lots of potential there!
