So earlier today I saw a handful of recruits with big black puffy eyes and runny noses. This can only mean one thing here at the sheriff?s department.
Non-Lethal weapon day!
My department currently uses a vast array of non-lethal weapons. To be allowed to carry them on your person or in your patrol vehicle you have to get them used on you. Since our Sheriff wants everyone to use pepper spray and a Taser we all have that done to us. We are also now implementing a tool that we call a ?Luke Light? though I?m not sure what it?s actually called.
It?s basically a flashlight that emits a green light that doesn?t actually light up the room so much as blind the person you point it at, it also really fucking hurts your eyes for a good 10 seconds. They?re very expensive though so only the SWAT guys get to have them (they get all the cool toys.)
I?m always very enthused by learning about non-lethal weapons. Having had to discharge my weapon in the line of duty a number of times (I was a vice officer it happens in that department) I am always interested in learning about new non-lethal weapons. My older brother is the head of the SWAT team on a different department and always lets me hear about these things,.
So, escapists thoughts on NLW? Do you know of any sweet devices out there? What's your favorite you've seen/heard about? Do you want one? Would you be willing to be subjected to one? What kind would you wield in a fight to the pain?

It's been a long time since I visited the UK but, I thought they didn't even carry guns for the most part?
Though a cudgel can be pretty leathal I suppose.

Tasers and pepper spray seem to be the go to gadgets here... if there ever needed...
I live in the town with the lowest crime rate in my state.

The worst is a traffic violation or maybe a shoplifter, the last violent crime... was... wow I can't remember...

I don't like weapons in general. But if there was one kind of weapons I liked more than others it would definitely be the non-lethal kind.

As for carrying one myself, I think I'd have to pass...

In Norway the police keep an MP5 locked away in their cars for "special ocations", usually they don't carry any weapons at all.

I think they're a good idea when used on dangerous individuals.

However I also believe that that there use on organised protests is dangerous to our personal freedoms, as it creates news friendly oppression. Years ago, lethal force was the way of disbanding a determined protest. As shown in the French and Russian revolution (and even during the Vietnam war), a regime that was willing to use lethal force on their own citizents would eventually collapse. In the modern age we can water cannon, tear gas and soon heat ray crowds into submission without drastically damaging the governments image.

Is your town small, magical, or both?

By the way if I had to rank how much is sucks to have those three items used on you I?d say Getting Taser?d is the least painful, followed by the 'Luke' Light, and I hate getting Pepper Sprayed every year. I dread that day so much. It?s awful. Because they subject us to the spray in it?s Liquid form and it?s a lot more potent.

And that's pretty rare to find, although if you go round the London landmarks they're all packing heat.

I actually got to go on a ride with the Bobbies while visiting London, some of the older ones seemed appalled when I asked if they use firearms. I can't remember what they called the team, (it was like 6 years ago) but it was basically four cops that drove around in a van and broke up bar fights and that sort of thing. They were disappointed that their supervisor wouldn't let me help. (I was a good 4 to 6 inches taller than all of them) :p

The real question is do the Buckingham Palace guards have any weapon other than that rifle?

edit: Pretty sure their hat could be used non lethally.

The bearskin hat isn't actually a skin, it's a sleeping bear, ready to attack. Which is one of the reasons they never move.

See! I told my buddy "that's not a 'stern warning face' that gaurd has an 'abject terror' face" Now I know I was right because who wouldn't be terrified of the attack bear on their noggin?

But it's funny that the Bear has never killed a tourist! I mean the amount of guys who try pissing off the guard into even changing facial expression is staggering, not to mention Good looking women strutting their stuff. If I were the Bear I'd have started a slaughter years ago!

OT: Police in the UK have so many restrictions on using their non-lethal weapons that there's no point in even getting them out. However from what I've seen on US cop programmes (God they're hilarious{British ones too actually}) American Cops get their guns out on principal...or am I wrong there?

A couple of years ago, when I was in London, I crossed ne of the various bridges to be confronted with a someowhat unhappy looking policeman weilding a submachine gun. Not the old kind either, this was a pretty decent gun. Now if that isn't a deterrent for crime...
