I got a friend who isn't into superheroes, but he has told me he wants to read comics. He's already been given We3 to read, and liked that. I told him about Fables, since it's the only non-superhero series on my shelf. I've remembered Y: The Last Man, so I'll be sure to tell him about that. If anyone can suggest anything else, I'll be sure to pass it on to him.

Would they be willing to try Watchmen?

Yes, it has superheroes in it, but it is far from the typical superhero stories.

The Walking Dead

It's the only zombies story that focuses on the people,I liked it.

V for Vendetta.

It's almost as good as Watchmen, and it's without superheroes.

100 Bullets. Fantastic comic, but gets a bit mind-screwy near the end.

Possibly Preacher, but that has the potential to get a little, uhm, preachy.

Tomb Raider's not bad, but you do have to have a liking for it beforehand.

Sin City's always worth a read.

I agree with this. Watchmen features 'Costumed Adventurers' who are more like regular people. Even the modern ones aren't all that super powered except for Manhattan and Oz...

There are always harem manga like, Love Hina or, Suzuka.

Transmetropolitan[footnote]by Warren Ellis[/footnote]. He must read that.
It is pure vulgar hilarity.
Oh, and The Goon[footnote]By Eric Powell[/footnote] is also great.

Oh man, you already suggested everything I was going to say in the first post (those are all awesome, btw)...

Oh, maybe Locke & Key? It's kind of supernatural/ghost type stuff, written by Stephen King's son. There are 2 volumes out now, I've only read the first, but that was quite good.

And there's also Pride of Baghdad - it was written by the same author as Y. It's about a pride of lions that escapes the zoo during the bombing of Baghdad, inspired by true events.

Pride of Baghdad is great. Air is probably my favourite non-superhero thing on the shelves now, but I trade wait that. Radical's Aladdin is pretty fun, the artwork is beautiful. And if you're willing to put up with a slight lack of pacing Try Joe the Barbarian (Vertigo), or Captain Swing and the Electrical Pirate of Cindery Island (Avatar).

Agree with both of these.

The Sandman, Swamp Thing, Preacher and The Walking Dead are all sure bets. Over half the comic books I read aren't superhero stuff at all, it's not hard to find.

Much obliged, friend. If you're unsure of where to send it, I think I left the number of my phone trait connection on my profile, just give me a jingle and I'll forward you the adress.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to the Breatharian Church and laugh at a bunch of salivating religious idiots while chowing down on some burgers.

Two words: THE BOYS! By Preacher creator Garth Ennis!

Anyone who doesn't like superheroes will enjoy The Boys. The comic is set in an alternative universe where WW2 - era scientists came up with a chemical that gives people superpowers. 60 years later, superheroes are running rampant, being worshipped like rock stars while the government covers up their often insanely destructive antics, making them look like the glorious heroes of the comic books.

That's pretty much ALL the government can do - the superheroes, with their super strength and laser vision and whatnot, are impervious to any kind of law enforcement and just do whatever they want at all times. This is where The Boys come in: A group of axe-crazy misfits who live only to kick superhero ass! They are constantly keeping an eye on every superhero out there, and whenever a group of superheroes step too far out of line, The Boys grab their baseball bats and crowbars and administer a well-deserved, epic beating!

Alternatively, if your friend just wants to avoid superheroes altogether, I would recommend Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis (for the reasons stated by Neonbob), The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Alan Moore (especially to people who likes steampunk)...

... or, if I may suggest a classic: Popeye!

Yes, I know those cheap 1960s cartoons and comics familiar to most modern audiences aren't that entertaining - but the original newspaper strips drawn by Elzie Crisler Segar from 1929 until his death in 1938, are still considered to be among the finest comics of all time. Forgotten for decades, the original strips are now being re-published by Fantagraphics. For someone who is unfamiliar with comics, the original Popeye strips are WELL worth checking out!
