there are a few out there that are nothing like world or warcraft etc. and are actually not completely lame.

big expansion for a pretty unheard of game called darkfall just came out which I'm currently playing. added giant kraken which can destroy the ships players can craft and ride into battle.

I tried Darkfall at release, that was enough to put me off it.

To be fair it looks like it has come a long way since then, but the way the Devs were interacting with their extremely dedicated fans/player base was a poor show.

But you're right, not all MMO's suck, just most of them.

It's like a gaming forum but with everyone basically having the ability to ban other players at will.

I don't like other people time to corpse camp/pod kill/kill steal.

But considering I will be an actual GM starting Monday I should also point out that if you play an MMO on a non-pvp server for games that offer it you will largely meet nice people.

At least when I did have my little forray in WoW I ended up finding a guild for each of my chars where the guild would almost beg to help me level (and anyone else low for that matter very friendly people). It was a stark contrast from the PVP servers motto of "STFU OR GTFO" if you so much as dared to ask a question .

I think PVP just teases people into being assholes, since it gives them the ability to end anyone elses game for as long as they like.

Besides, of course not all MMOs suck. World of Warcraft and City of Heroes I know from experience are good, and I've heard good things about Champions Online, Lord of the Rings Online, and a couple of others.

Guild Wars. Because it's not really an MMORPG, but more of an Massive Singleplayer Online RPG.
Instancing = Good.

Also, Dragonica and Valkyrie Sky for mixing up your standard MMORPG.

Darkfall sucks. It was doomed to failure before it was released.

Basically, 99% of free MMOs suck. The 1% that doesn't suck is Ragnarok Online Valkyrie server and Dungeons and Dragons Online.

From P2P MMOs that don't suck, Guild Wars and perhaps RO count. WAR is good pre-T3, Aion before level 27-30. AoC is crappy, WoW boring, CoH/V is (IMO) inferior to Champions Online, CO has little end-game content and melee customization + balance is weak. Also technical problems.
