Until Recently I thought piracy had really clear-cut lines, buy your movies, dont watch online, etc. That was until today.
So my parents have PVR (recording TV would be the same) and the recorded line up consists mostly of movies, and no one seems to think its bad. The excuse is that they payed for the PVR, so they're allowed. But dont you pay for internet? so would movies downloaded/streamed online be acceptable?
Another dilemma i've come across is; lets say you're going on a trip. You want something to do on the long ride there, would it be ok to rent a movie, burn a copy, and put it on you ipod to watch so long as you delete it once you get home? after all, you paid to watch it, and all you changed is where and how you're watching it. Plus this way someone else gets to see it sooner. Or how about this; my VCR player is broken, so could it be ok to watch my old VCR movies online? after all, i bought them already, im just not able to watch them normally.

Or maybe im just thinking to much into this. But anyways, what you Escapists think?

[small]I also haven't checked if there has been a similar thread, so sorry if this is a repeat[/small]

Piracy is more the Distribution of burned files, rather than the production or possession. They are more technicalities for the sake of trial. As long as you dont distribute them, and as long as you dont get caught (Which you wont), its fine really.
I wouldnt go telling anyone that in reality though.

All the stuff you listed would probably fall square under some copyright violation or the DMCA, but I don't care. Those laws were made to keep the street vendor pirates at bay while instead they get abused so that the content holders can make more money by charging you repeatedly for the same content. Screw them. You bought the right to view the product, and damn them if they didn't provide it in a way that is convenient for you. You are the one that paid them after all.
