Hey escapists, over the summer I'm getting a new computer, and I was wanting to know some notable single player PC games to try. I like FPS's, RPG's, Adventure and RTS games. Any recommendations would be helpful to my library!

Fallout 3. It is a great game, not the greatest but it does have the greatest quality to length ratio ever, so if you are looking for a long term game go for it.

Knights of the Old Republic, The Witcher, Half Life 2 + Episodes, Beyond Good and Evil, Oblivion, Bioshock, Fallout 3, Morrowind, XIII, Advent Rising, Warcraft III, Medieval: Total War II, Zeno Clash, and Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit all spring to mind as great single player games.

Yep. Great games, all of them. Especially STA- crap. Now I'm going to have to play STALKER again. Look what you've done. I was just beginning to be productive.

Also make sure to check out the mods for these games, especially S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Fallout 3. More specifically AMK for stalker and fallout wanderers edition for fallout 3. At least if you're into immersion.

Titan Quest. my 2nd favorite game ever. EPIC storyline, AWESOME array of monsters and EUPIX bosses. it is kinda what would have happened if Diablo 2 had been any good.

also Heroes of Might and Magic 3-5. best turned based strategy game ever made.

Vampire: The Masqurade - Bloodlines (if you install the community made patch, I applied several patchwork patches before I discovered the handy community ones)
The episodic Sam & Max games
Mass Effect
Beyond Good and Evil
Fallout 1 & 2 (haven't played three yet, it's on my list)
Bioshock
Anything by Valve

I've also heard great things about Zeno Clash.

Portal (Hell the whole Orange Boxis good)
COD4-5 (unlike most FPSs you can level up, getting better weapons and the like)
Halo 1-2
GTA IV (Hey, I liked it)
Saints Row 2
Warcraft 3 (and better yet, DotA!)
Half-Life
Assassin's Creed (only if you don't have it on a console. Its spec requirements are /very/ high)
Fable
Far Cry 1 & 2
Age of Empires 3
Quake 3
World of Goo (great game, heartily recommend it)
Psychonauts
Beyond Good & Evil

... Yeah, that looks like a good list.

Civ 4, they just released the price for the complete set, it's pretty fun and very single player based. You should have fun with it.

If you can enjoy older games... There are lots of excellent single-player RPGs to be discovered.

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2
Planescape Torment
Fallout 1 & 2
KOTOR 1 & 2
NWN 1 & 2

Just to name a few.

I second Planescape: Torment, one of the best written RPG games I have ever played.

Single-Player?

Avoiding most things mentioned...

RTS:
-Starcraft
-Supreme Commander (very good skirmish mode)
-Defense Grid (debatable)

FPS:
-Unreal Anthology (5 dollars for 4 games, two of which are designed for single-player story-ish progression)
-Quake 4
-Doom 3
-FEAR
-CRYSIS <-- (It's really not as bad as everyone says it is if you LIKE shooters and if you use your suit intelligently and efficiently)

RPG:
-Fallout series (Mentioned before but has to be mentioned again)
-Baldur's Gate <--ESPECIALLY 2
-Elder Scrolls series

Other:
-Mechwarrior 2/3
-Tachyon: The Fringe
-Wing Commander

For RTS you need to pick up the relic pack for 50 bucks (dawn of war 1 and two of its 3 expansions winter assault and dark crusade, plus company of heros and its first expansion) it will be the best 50 bucks that you ever spent.

for first person shooters You have to play FEAR 1 (not 2 aviod it) DOOM 3 and Half life 1 and 2 (plus episodes) SYSTEM SHOCK 2 for the love of god (Bioshock basically copies system shock 2 in every way possible. If you are getting a good PC then play crysis its a great game. Its true that how much fun you have in that game is totally dependent on how well you use the suit. If you havent play Duke Nukem its a classic.

For RPG/adventure you have to play The Witcher Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit Beyond Good and Evil, The longest journey and its squeal (The ending for the squeal is terrible but the rest of that game is so damned good).

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2
Planescape Torment
Fallout 1 & 2
KOTOR 1 & 2
NWN 1 & 2

these are great oldschool games and should be played.

Avoid the sims and avoid halo for pc. The sims because its borning as hell and halo becuase there are way better mutiplayer fps on pc (TF2 unreal, ect)

It depends whether you're going for older or newer games.

But if you haven't played it, get System Shock 2. That is all.
