On iPad to me is worthless, a device that is twice the cost of a netbook yet far worse controls... not worth it. Even with those "fling" stick on analogue nubs, I need buttons damn it.

3DS could work fairly well if you had some sort of thumb-mounted stylus for the screen for looking around and stuff.

Best portable platform I think would be NGP/PSP2 with dual-analogue and rear touch screen, that means possibly with a final release on steam-works it could have cross platform play. Minecraft at home then minecraft some more on the daily commute. Can you use the word "Minecraft" as a verb?
Why can't more people have common sense like Treblaine here?

Sheep and iSlaves alike will be elated, but really something like this on a touch screen would be tough.

When asked if Minecraft can be a verb I thought of this:

These smartphones just got Minecrafted :D

This make sense. 600,000 people bought in at alpha, so everything from here on out for them is free. The people who have bought in during the beta also get a wicked deal.
None of this will be applicable in a portable realm though. Notch can make back some of the money he opted out of, and people can get a minecraft fix on the go. Win-win?

Well, only if it gets optimized in a way that avoids the chunk errors and doesnt heat my i-device to solar proportions.

Hooray!

Productivity, you had a good run.
Oh puh-lease! Productivity's corpse have already been buried, dug out and defiled repeatedly with the amount of time we already spend in MineCraft. This will just further the necrophilia.

I really need to stop with these analogies and get my meds...

There needs to be a DS version of Minecraft.I wouldn't mind it being compatible with both versions so I don't have to cough up 250 bucks, but still, portable Minecraft!

Touch screen controls really aren't that bad. If people can play fast-paced FPSs on the iPhone, Minecraft is no problem. You just stick a directional pad in the left of the screen, add a jump button, punch button and a put block button on the right, and keep the same buttons on the bottom of the screen like in browser Minecraft. Lower the draw distance, and it would run fine. There's an unofficial minecraft app already that allows offline building in real Minecraft map files.
I've been waiting for an official one so I can give my money to the right people, though.

Still costs 2x as much as a netbook that is as powerful, can run the game 100% natively and with no alteration to controls or presentation at all.

I understand the appeal of tablet configuration, the WAY it would be used but that way precludes the type of controls needed for minecraft.

Games for iPad have to be built from the ground up, ports of PC games are not going to cut it... IMHO.

Jesus Christ, you come onto any Mac-related thread you see to post hate about Apple products, don't you? You've posted the same comment twice in this very thread.

We get it, you don't like Apple. And yes, that is your opinion. Here's a far out idea for you: some people aren't stupid people who don't know any better, they just like Apple products and can get whatever functionality they need from them.
That is the appeal.

Shouting insults (And yes, bringing up negative qualities of something does count as an insult) about something all the time is just really, really annoying. (And typically irrelivent to the topic, constituting an act of thread derailment)

So yeah, cut it out, you're doing nothing but messing up a thread.
IMHO, of course. Because tagging "IMHO" onto the end of a blatantly negative rant makes everything so friendly and courteous.

I worry, I own an iPod Touch 2nd Generation, so it's possible I won't be able to get it because of its system requirements...

And how much will it cost? Do you have to have a minecraft.net account and use that on the app?

Mac related? Who mentioned Mac OS X?

iOS =/= OS X

My concern was directed at iPad, and WHEN did I express hated of Apple in general? I happen to love my iPod Touch and if there is any company that I broadly hate then it is Microsoft (even though I use Vista and have a 360 (that I rarely use), that's just because it is the status quo for PC gaming)

I think it is YOU who is the prejudiced one, unable to take any criticism of iPad without interpreting it as an attack on Apple.

You've posted the same comment twice in this very thread.

This thread is about the iPad and games on it.

If you think I cannot talk about ANY negative aspects of it without it being considered "insulting" or "thread-derailing", then you can Think Again. All apple products are not sacred cows beyond criticism.

I have brought up the VERY FAIR point that straight-ports from PC games will not work well for iPad. The iPad is a great platform and is very powerful but it is used in such a different way that games for it really REALLY do need to be built from the ground up. I don't think a game like Minecraft is suitable for iPad.

It is WHEN you use the iPad to run the SAME games/programs as netbooks/laptops that the iPad's value:price issue becomes more stark.

iPad is worth it's money when its form factor is exploited in restrictive environments (bed, couch, train seat) with applications that have very elementary user interaction such as note taking, web browsing, movie watching, simple 2D games, etc. Certain 3D games work but only built from the ground up with VERY simplified controls and gameplay.
