Stay classy, Escapists.

OT: Exactly how I feel. I would be okay with Origin if it wasn't for the intention, which was obvious "NO GIVE US YOUR MONEY INSTEAD".
Instant nerd rage ensues when you say "origin good" or "steam bad" in anyway on here. So I'm not surprised so many read the title, began frothing at the mouth and became too blind with rage to actually read the article. If they did that they'd realize it's standard escapist sensationalist headline that doesn't fit the article.

Notch is correct here, Origin is a good thing, because it meant that Steam had to stay on its toes, which is a good thing.

EA is a bad thing for the industry however, and it is unfortunate that Steam's competition happens to be owned by EA.

What Notch means is that the fact that Origin exists at all is a good thing, he doesn't say that as a thing it's any good at what does or is or is not intrusive.

A lot of you guys here are completely misreading this.

"Notch Calls Origin "a Good Thing""

So we are back at "we need to battle evil with more evil" then?

And, the Valve fanboys throw a fit. LOL. But, at least some people know how to think intelligently. Go Notch!

A sensationalist headline might read, "Notch Freakin' Loves Him Some Origin ... Mmm, Mmm Good!" not just a direct summarizing quote. Notch actually did say that he feels as though Origin is a good thing. If you chose to interpret the current headline as referring to the platform's inner mechanics as opposed to its conceptual existence, that's a product of the way you think, for better or worse, not the syntax of the sentence in question. You could be on to something if you're about to reply something similar to "But then you should have written it like ... " but then again, the way it's currently written is my prerogative as the author of the post.

Also, contrary to what I can only assume is a somewhat popular misconception, The Escapist is not a pay-per-hit website for news contributors. The writers here do our best to make headlines concise, and if we're really feeling froggy, fun. We accept no additional compensation for popularity, nor do the editors ever, ever pressure us into misconstruing headlines or purposely misleading the readership. Sorry if you felt confused by this one, but I'm glad that the focus of the article narrowed once you read through it, as intended.

Possibly off topic but, why is it news any time Notch says anything? I mean really, it's a little out of hand. Who cares if Notch likes origin??

Well yeah. The idea of an alternative digital distribution platform is a good idea. The problem is that the alternative is poorly designed and splitting up people's libraries, which people don't like to do.

If it was a well made alternative I'd be all for it.

one of the most non-controversial statements ive ever heard. that wasnt sarcasm, anyone who thinks it would be good if steam had no real competition is an idiot. i use steam because, to me, its the best service for pc gaming. do i wish there was an alternative? fuck yeah! i cant see myself ever using origin unless i have to, but im glad there are companies that are at least trying to compete with them

When Origin starts offering me prices that aren't shit, maybe I'll care. I've purchased games from other services in the past because it was offered for less. EA needs to learn that they need to keep up with Valve on the deals to be a real competitor.

I will agree that competition is always good. The more competition, the better a service that will be offered to entice people to use it. Meaning if Origin ever DOES become a comparable service to Steam, things will only get better for the consumer.

Dafuq?

Um, does no one really know about Impulse?

Seriously, there was an article on this very site where Brad Wardell (former CEO before his company sold the platform to Gamestop) discussed how having Impulse as competition to Steam was a good thing.

Sorry Notch, gotta disagree with ya here. It's a piece of intrusive shit on a stick wanting to be steam without the ethic or goodwill to users. How much did they pay you? Better yet...who killed notch and replaced him with an Origin OS robot?
Whoosh

His point isn't that Origin is good in itself, it's that its existence is good. It means competition to Steam, meaning Valve actually has to do something to make Steam shine as the superior platform - without competition, there's no reason for them to even try.

I don't get it. This guy makes one huge game, makes a lot of money, then throws the money around (albeit nicely to charities/other indies) and suddenly everyone hangs on his every word like he is some kinda new age messiah or gaming industry savant? I don't get it. What has he really done to deserve the attention he gets? Why should I care what his opinion is over someone else's? I'm not asking to be a dick, I really don't understand what is so special about him.
You have a very valid point. I'm not really sure either.

You know, I'd almost agree with the man, but considering Origin is a trash heap of a system, it's not the kind of competition we really need. It's like pitting one store that caters to their customer's needs and another that slams the door on your ass as you leave. Sure, Steam could use some competition to keep things interesting, but EA's Origin is not what the industry needs. We already have Microsoft's debacle-of-a-platform...we don't need EA to roll out the red carpet for another piece of junk.

Competition is always a good thing. Unfortunately at this point one of the biggest competitors to Steam isn't the overpriced crap on Origin. Its Amazon.

I'm aware that in this sense origin is a good thing... I still dislike having it.

Have you read Steam's that lets them do the same?

And don't forget google! And just about every other place that wants to use people as market research.

I just looked it up. (I knew about it earlier, but first time looking it up)
The prices are great. Much lower than Steam or Origin (ME3 is about 10 euro more expensive on Origin than on Impulse; Amnesia The Dark Descend is ~3.5 euro on impulse and ~15 on Steam). There is just 1 problem. There are no games that are available in my country.
Everything I've looked up is only available in the US and UK. Too bad that they don't know that the world is bigger than those 2 countries. My only real option is Steam. Buying them in local stores... if I'm lucky to even find them, they will be at least 10% more expensive than on Steam. Origin is more expensive than Steam. Other don't offer anything in my region.

Oh yeah, there is GoG. I have some games on it, but they offer only older games. I have most of the once that I'm interested in.

And Captcha... great commercial.

EDIT:
Found "some" games that I can buy, but nothing interesting or new. Still, gonna keep an eye on it. Maybe they change that part.

Remind me, how did Steam get users? I seem to have forgotten.

Yeah, but if they actually did that then their position would be invalid, and they couldn't shout anymore. And boy, do they love shouting!

Which is why they're currently having a huge 50% off sale, including stuff like BF3.
