Well this thread is going places...

Notch made a successful product, he maintained it for several years, he employed other people to help develop it (I'm guessing that's why his vacation time increases - Jeb be workin' hard)

Microsoft offered him a literal truckload of money for his product, and he said okay, then paid his staff generously.

Minecraft still exists, I can still play it, I am happy with it's current state (which has a lot more content than when I bought it originally - all for free)

I would do an awful lot of questionable things if someone seriously offered me 3 billion dollars. Selling a profitable company to a corporation who would continue it's success is not an evil or degenerate thing, also those questions the kids asked where totally bizarre, awkward and actually painful at times. I don't see how asking someone to rephrase their stuttered, badly worded question (or request) is being a passive aggressive mongoloid.

Notch "sold out" because he was sick of people doing things like digging through his financial history and calling him things like "degenerate", and he didn't want to be in the big indie spotlight any longer.

I also find it somewhat amusing that it's always the angry internet forumites who immediately leap to name-calling with things like "mongoloid", when the people they're insulting have been largely respectful in whatever context they're being brought up. Or at least more respectful.

In this the creator of gmod goes on to praise notch for selling out to microsoft without any hesitation. The thing is, all he does is praise the bussiness mindset. Notch doesn't really take up noteworthy professional ethics.
I don't even know what's going on here. Are you mad at Notch? For selling the thing he made? For 2.5 billion dollars?

Cause I would murder all y'all in stone cold blood for 2.5 billion dollars. Even the children. Hell, especially the children, they'd be the easiest to catch.

I'd sell my dad for 2.5 bn. Hell, I'd sell him for far less than that.

And Notch is on the record for saying he would only sell out for 2 billion or more. Looks like Microsoft is a good listener. (on the other hand, I really don't think Mojang is worth that much.
At one level, I find it sad that big success stories can be bought, but then I know plenty sold out for far less than that, so I can't get mad at Notch.

Ah, there's the issue. You're butthurt because Minecraft is more popular than some shitty Natural Selection game no one has heard of, glad we could sort that out.
So you have nothing to say that actually affects the core point? Am I in the wrong for like, caring about the video game industry and expressing emotions?

At the end of the day, notch is a hack developer and hack businessman. There is no good cause to respect this action.

Screenshot this: Notch will spend even more of his money on hookers and vacations now, just watch.

I don't get it. what's wrong with Natural Selection 2? It's doing perfectly fine right now. Unless this is one of those things where you insault the person by dissing what they like?

What sort of a tasteless retard would call themselves a video game hobbyist and offer commentary on the industry and not be upset that worse games are more popular.

Why did you spend time posting this? Yes, the game does look like shit. It doesn't matter why, the bottem line is that it looks like shit and takes less skill to develop.

Proof or it didn't happen. Crime records? Arrest photos? News reports? "Hookers and blow" may sound like a catchphrase to apply to any random million or billionaire, but it's also really easy to prove or disprove so unless you have evidence, I'll just assume you really are just an angry kid who's upset that a game that

For $2.5b I would do... things. Awful things.

Frankly how can you expect someone to not sell Minecraft for that amount? Now I am not a big fan of Notch myself, but he deserves the money he gets. That is what happens when you create something this fucking revolutionary (and yes Minecraft is revolutionary). The programmers still working on it got a nice chunk of the change and they haven't complained, so why the hell should you?

At least I think that is your point, the lack of any describable thesis or conclusion makes the point of this rant rather unclear.

Sweet Sally Ann, this thread is off to an absolutely rip-roaring start!

But now for the serious part...

(...) let's look at a bunch of manchildren act passive aggressive and like mongoloids in response to young children that they are offended by, to the point where they can't even answer basic questions about the game they are developing(...)
Can't we just not look at and refer to humans as that and, instead of saying we did, just shut it down, burn the records, bury the hatch and sell the land?

A prejudice-laden stream of consciousness does not an enlightened discussion make.

EDIT:
Screenshot this: Notch will spend even more of his money on hookers and vacations now, just watch.
I fear for the consequences of revealing what I'd do with that much money now...hookers and vacations would merely be the beginning. He can do what he likes with his money, though, so long as it doesn't violate the law.

That's the thing though. He does one standard transaction and suddenly he's cited as some respectable bussinessman. He's awful with budgets, he has more passion for hookers and blow than he does developing video games, and he's not going to expand and do great things in the industry because he doesn't have too. F-king Robert Kotik probably has more passion for making good games than this guy.

He's not evil for this but he is a degenerate. Anybody who actually was decent would massively expand the company and take on projects, instead of cashing out.
He left to get out of the spotlight from people like you. You are already painting him with hookers and blow instead of simply being tired of having to constantly defend his actions to people like you because you seriously can't please everybody. I have long said that Notch is not a great developer but I do think he was great as a person for the industry. He actually has a good gamer perspective. In short, he is tired of dealing with people who have a poor gamer perspective, you know, like painting people they don't know as womanizing cokeheads over an unrelated E-rated game transaction. Ironically enough, he sold the company because he didn't want to feel obligated to to please people like you anymore.

I don't think Notch is a great developer but I am pretty sure he agrees and that makes him awesome as a person in my book. He's grounded.

Every popular video game personality in the history of ever? If something is popular, how is it 'worse'? You can't objectively quantify 'worse' in an artistic medium. As soon as someone likes the 'worse' thing 'better', it is 'better'. If more people say it is better than those who say it is worse, how does that make it worse?

Is he? I mean, I don't think I've seen any evidence that he's really tried to position himself as some guru or 'father of the industry' or whatever. By most accounts he's been fairly reluctant and detached from it all. So I don't really see your point.
Duster said:

Why? Mojang probably will never replicate their success, but if Microsoft are daft enough to buy Mojang at that price why the hell shouldn't he sell? It's his company, his money, his choice. He can sell all the assets and move into the sex toy industry if he wants. Just because you don't agree doesn't make him a 'degenerate'. Calm down.

Duster said:
There are voxel based games that where developed by single people, have better terrain ai and have faster updates than minecraft, so don't try to sell minecraft as excellent at it's job.
Evidently Minecraft is excellent at it's job because it's been proportionally more successful than just about any other franchise in the past few years. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it unsuccessful or poor in any objective sense.

Edit: I only just noticed this, but why the fuck are you bandying phrases like 'mongoloid' around? By itself that's in seriously poor taste, but when coupled with certain other phrases - 'degenerate' for example - it starts to suggest something rather more inimical. So do yourself a favour.

Are you totally mad?

Notch made one good game and founded a studio that, in all honesty, was never going to match their initial success. Instead of squandering his success on a slow death, yeah, he sold out (although I doubt he'd put it that way). He's now a near-billionaire, and paying each employee three mil is LITTLE? If my company sold out and I got a three million dollar golden parachute, I'd use six of it to buy my billionaire boss a beer for setting me up for life.

Yeah it sucks that MS ate up another little developer but as a person Notch did nothing wrong and cheated nobody.

and your point is?

minecraft has been running on *essentially* free updates for the last few years i mean it must have been at least 3 years now that it went into beta and 2 years since it was considered finished

hell minecraft beta started on December 20, 2010 and you could have called it complete, the game had tons of playability just on its own merits and has been polished over the last 4 years

so long story short, the game was practically finished when it came out onto beta but notch decided to continuously update it and polish it over

essentially your just bitter because the game is no longer "indie"

btw your argument about natural selection being "something" better, you do realise there's a lot more to minecraft than just putting some pictures on a block, right?

there's a lot more coding involved in minecraft than in natural selection 2, you know?

1. Your abrasive tone doesn't make you sound smart, nor does your use of condescending words. It outs you as an elitist and your opinions in a lot of folks eyes are going to be invalidated by your insulting tone. Just a few words of advice, if you want to be taken seriously I'd drop the pretentious arrogance you are showing here.

2. Comparing a CEO who took excessive vacations to a guy who started a company almost by accident and a game that he very likely didn't expect to be as big as it became is ridiculous. Notch did nothing unethical by selling his company, he probably did the smartest thing possible.

3. So your indie game of choice didn't sell as well as Minecraft, beg someone else for a tissue. It means absolutely nothing except that maybe just maybe Minecraft is much more universally accessible for gamers from all walks of life. Whether you like it or not isn't relevant to the discussion nor is comparing an apple to an orange.

So you've succeeded in being the angry internet guy who seems to think opinion = fact. I'll give you an opinion, I think you're that guy who sees someone else succeed in life at something you yourself can't do, are jealous of that success and are lashing out in any way you can. I'd suggest that you do something constructive with your time but I doubt you'd take advice from a faceless goat demon.
Enjoy your life as much as you can, with your attitude it seems like there's little to enjoy thout.

The difference between Notch and Mark Kern is that Notch actually released a game. Minecraft has been out since at least 2009 and continually updated since then. At times, sure, it's been sporadic, but the game is out and so long as he, or others he paid, kept working on it, no matter how sporadically, that doesn't change the fact that the game was out, and later given an official release in 2011. What about Firefall? We've known about it since 2010 and it just now got a release on July 29, 2014. Not to mention that Mark Kern was as bad to work for as Brendan McNamara.

And if you call three million dollars a small handful, you must be rolling in money yourself. I'd love to have gotten a bonus of $3,000,000, myself. It's going to take most of my life just to get somewhere close to that amount.

Notch didn't want to work on minecraft anymore. It's not "selling out" to sell of something you don't want, and which requires a lot of your time. It's simply a good decision.
