Don't you hate that?

You're watching a movie trailer. Looks pretty interesting, then all of a sudden, "Nothing Will Ever Be The Same" will flash across the screen.

I for one can't stand it. Every time I see a movie trailer with that line, I know it's gonna be some overhyped crap that takes itself too seriously.

Really? Nothing will be the same after I see this movie? How Earth shattering could this possibly be?

Take the new Avatar trailer for example. First off, I don't have high hopes for this movie. I never did. But when I saw that line on the trailer, that really did it for me. Then I knew it would be some crap that takes itself way to seriously.

The only time I've ever seen that before and the movie not suck was with Watchmen and for good reason. That movie/book does change everything. That truly is Earth shatteringly awesome.

What does the Escapist think about movies that lure you in with cheesey lines like this one?

I think you've overblown the Watchmen, that's for sure.

Yes I do hate the original topic, there really is nothing paradigm changing about any movies that have come out lately.

I never really notice the dodgy taglines or phrases, it's always that damn movie voice that annoys me though. There seem to be 3 kinds - The deep actiony one, the slightly higher comedy/romance one, and the 'tries too hard to be ominous' horror one.

I think its hilarious, in a bad way, when they throw one word at the screen at a time and its like a 50 word paragraph they have to get through.

But yeah I hate those cliched, over hype buzz words. My least favourite is, "Someone must rise" which just makes me cringe all over.

Indeed, I do despise lines like that. They set themselves up for a fall that they shouldn't be willing to take.

It's almost like going to watch a tribute band. You KNOW they're going to suck because they have to attempt to be as good as the actual band.

When the cliché quota is filled before the trailer is over, you know the movie is gonna suck...

[HEADING=3]IN A WORLD...WHERE ALL SEEMS LOST[/HEADING]
*panning scene of chaos and/or armeggedon*

*shows young, attractive/grizzled, disillusioned male lead saying something that sets his character's personality*
[HEADING=3]THIS SUMMER[/HEADING]
Operatic music lifted from that balls-suckingly-bad Requiem for a Dream everyone uses on youtube to convey "epic". Lots of action sequences spliced together.

Scenes speed up until they flash in front of you and explode into a title or a date

Nothing will ever be the same.

I don't know about that, but I'll never see Sean Connery the same way again.

I hate all movie taglines. They think they're being so original, but they just like to rip off everyone. I know it happens alot in real life, but they're not even trying.

I think something in me just died...a portion of my soul cried out in terror but was suddenly silenced.

OT: Although I don't like the cheesy lines in trailers, I'd be quiet happy to suffer it if the Trailer didn't show half the movie and gave away most of the plot.

I hate when they throw the actors name on the screen to try and say 'this guy's in it, so you should go see it!' As if an actor automatically makes a movie good. Quite the opposite in most cases. If a movie ever throws the name 'Nicholas Cage' at me, it has pretty much proudly proclaimed to me that it is going to be a pile of horseshit featuring an actor who has not yet realized that he can control his facial muscles or change the sound/intensity/pitch/inflection of his voice.

I've been weirdly disappointed by the Avatar trailers. Especially after the first one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDj1CuBrcV8&feature=related ) was so excellent. The lack of typical trailer bullshit, the single line of speech ("This is great"), the steadily building heart-pound inducing music. It's beautiful. Shame the other trailers are so crud. And (if The Guardian is to be believed) shame that he seems to have dropped the ball on everything that ISN'T visuals.

Have a District 9 trailer to wash the bad taste out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHihFA8q8xI&feature=channel
Sure, it's got the typical melodramatic screen-text, but damn does it use it well. Probably the best swerve I've seen a trailer pull.
