O Rareware, Rareware! Wherefore art thou Rareware?

Hi there,

Ignoring the fact that the subject line is contextually inaccurate, (for those less literally inclined: "wherefore" refers to "for what reason" as opposed to location,) the question remains: Where has the legendary Rare Software gone?

Rareware has a number of impressive titles under their belts. The obvious is 'Goldeneye,' which brought the first-person-shooter, at long last, to the console. Then comes its spiritual successor, 'Perfect Dark,' which perfected (ha! I am so clever) the idea. Along with creating games with extremely solid, well-rounded gameplay, Rare also did a good job of pushing the Nintendo 64 to its meager limits on the graphical front. 'Conker's Bad Fur Day' was a visual masterpiece. Though possibly undermined by the fact that more than a few polygons were dedicated to rendering copious amounts of feces, the game had the best graphics on the system by far. That's ignoring the fantastic satire on pop-culture. They were the leading designers of the time; the console equivalent to Valve.

Of late, however, the company seems to have been in decline. They had little to show for the Xbox, despite Microsoft's unfortunate acquisition of the company. 'Grabbed by the Goulies' was an unmitigated disaster. Later, the remake of 'Conker,' the surnamed Live and Reloaded, was for some odd reason, exactly that: a remake. The class-based multiplayer was just "so-so." and the campaign was just a remake of the original. (Though again, Conker has by far the best graphics on the Xbox, almost standing up next to a few next-gen launch titles.) Instead of making a sequel to satire up-to-date pop culture, they had what can only be described as a cop-out.

As far as the current generation goes, they're nowhere to be found. Perfect Dark Zero was a massive disappointment. The graphics were sub-par and the gameplay was almost identical to the original, which is not a compliment. Kameo: Elements of power was passable, and I heard Viva-Piñata was good. But other than that, what is there? Where are the graphical powerhouses and innovative shooters? Rare hasn't had a blockbuster release for two generations of gaming, nowhere near Goldeneye or Perfect Dark.

For a company with so much prestige, why is it being overshadowed?

My thoughts centered on its limitations due to Microsoft's ownership. Rareware, with there often more unique gameplay style, (ie: Piñata) would be the perfect developer for the Wii. Of course, this is impossible. Also, they are unable to release Goldeneye and the likes on the Virtual Console for the same reason. The 360, though extremely powerful, is also very standard, inhibiting Rare's potential.

What are your thoughts on the matter?
Where has our beloved Rare Software gone?
When will it return?

I enjoyed Conker: Live and Reloaded (this comming from a guy who has never owned a N64). The multiplayer was a lot of fun and the game was a great little romp... after you get past that damn race level! But yeah, Banjo Kazooie isn't a rumour. You can see the trailer on Youtube... I'm far too lazy to post a link.

They've got Banjo-Threeie coming, though we've heard virtually nothing about it. I'm hoping for the best, as some members of the original development team for the the first two Banjo games are returning, but I can only hope so much without any info on it.

They're also planning a Perfect Dark 2, which will be "darker and more serious" than the last game, or so they say. I was one of the many who really enjoyed the PDZ's multiplayer mode despite the abysmal single-player missions. The original N64 title is the best game I've played to date, so I'll always have some faith in the franchise, even if PDZ disappointed in a few too many ways.

Rare is also always working on Nintendo DS titles, with a Viva Pinata game coming sometime. The Xbox 360 version (the original game from 2006, not the "Party Animals" thing they released this year) was a very addicting sandbox/sim game, so the DS version should be worth a look or two.

Kind of disturbed that you passed over a few decades of Rareware history and dozens of other superb games in your recollection, though.

I'm just recounting the games available in my lifespan, and though i still own a Nintendo 1 i was far too young to remember in detail the games of that era.

Though admittedly i forgot Banjo-Kazooie, which was a fabulous consoler, and also Jet Force Gemini, and probably others, i think i covered the most famous ones though.

but where are the blockbusters?

Their N64 titles were huge, but that seems to be a thing of the past. . .

Well Free Radical is what happened to Rare basically the whole Goldeneye/PD team left to form it. I actually like PDZ though all the guns were the same.

Still waiting for a jet force gemini sequel *cough* just throwing that out there.
that would be so awesome, if done right. currently console unfriendly though so a PC port? haha.

Jet Force Gemini was one of my most played N64 games, i still sometimes pull it out for a multiplayer romp; after PD.

I actually liked Dinosaur Planet, which probably has some of the best graphics on the GCN, things like Fox's fur n such. Only thing was that it was such a Zelda rip-off and was easy as pie. Be good for my nephew to play when hes teething himself with consoles since it was fun.

I'd call come back Rare but I'm a Nintendo man . . .

if Rare did come back to Nintendo they should bring Silicon Knights with them. Ahem.

I know you meant this as a compliment, but.... no.

Valve:
Half-life
Half-life 2
Some expansion packs
Portal
Team Fortress
All good games, but this is basically all Valve has released.

Rare: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Rare_games < holy crap, look at this list.

Even if you just count the classic releases, Rare still completely surpasses Valve in every way. They have made awesome shooters, awesome platformers in 2d and 3d, awesome fighting games, awesome racing games.... Valve has only ever made shooters, with the sorta-exception of Portal.

Donkey Kong you missed that out! The SNES game was near perfection, only beaten by Super Mario World. N64 version of Donkey Kong was abit so-so compared to Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie; which IMO was the best 3d platformer on the 64.

Lets hope Banjo Threeie or whatever its going to be called wont be a let down. The trailer i saw was pretty gorgeous, while keeping the originals' style. Hope they can work some programming magic and pre-fetching to remove the lead for level loadings etc.

of the nintendo 64 games i own, those that aren't first-party titles, are rare games: Killer Instinct Gold, Jet Force Gemini, Goldeneye, perfect dark, donkey kong... i could go on, but that list is a perfect example of the eclectic genius that WAS Rareware. :(
R.I.P one of the best developers in console history....

It's pretty difficult to compare the Rare of the Nintendo years to the Rare of today. Free Radical Design was founded by 4 of the (i believe 10) people that made GoldenEye. Sony started a now defunct developer with some of former heyday Rare employees. Zoonami was formed by another GoldenEye era alum after leaving during Perfect Dark's development to work on the Game Cube. The founders of the company left after 25 years back in January. And according to rumor, Nintendo hired a lot of the remaining talent before selling off it's share to Microsoft.

Microsoft's Rare isn't the talented Rare that made Nintendo games. It would be cool to see some of the old IPs get sequels but if Conker: Live and Reloaded is any indication, I'm expecting them to live up to the originals.

I didn't see anyone mention my favorite Rare game after GoldenEye, Blast Corps. I loved that title, it had such interesting puzzle type gameplay. The very simple premise of the truck moving at a uniform pace through the level, and you having to clear it's way with whatever was there (trucks, cars, cranes, whatever) I just loved.

Just a fun game.

But anyway, I don't know what happened to Rare. They developed such a wide variety of high quality games, despite being a rather quiet company and their games being prone to delays. Free Radical though has has done very well with the Timesplitters series (I loved Timesplitters 2 in particular, the first level just echoed GoldenEye so heavily) but they don't see to be as dynamic as Rare was in genres.

They made some very excellent titles, Banjo-Kazooie was fantastic and I'm praying that the upcoming one is available for other systems besides the abysmal Xbox.

They did Goldeneye, and before that they did Donkey Kong Country, one of the most innovative platformer series of its time, and at its time a pioneer in 3D graphics.
