Okay, I've tried to start this game twice (or maybe it was thrice) now. I'm borrowing it again and I want to play it through and beat it, I got issues when so many people play a game and have fun and I can't. So I will have fun this time (psych psych!).

I'm here to ask for advice how what I should play as and if I should get a mod or what (if so tell me the mod)

The first play I got past the first gate, I was one of those cat people sort of rogue class I believe, I found bow and arrow combat completely bogus because it consisted of walking backwards while firing and the enemy couldn't melee you. soooo boring.

Second play I believe I was a mage, and I just walked around killing everything way too easily, it was fun but no challenge, I didn't even make it to the first gate.

What should I do? As I said, going to finish it this time or die trying. I have a problem with games that give too many choices and I spend 3 hours making a character, (Mass effect/dragon age, oy!) So I'm hoping to avoid that this time.

Any helpful advice? (no spoilers)

If its to easy use the difficultly and make it harder, also its easier being nice and not killing everything on sight.
EDIT: when you run into the purple dragon its best to stop using skooma.

Re-Roll a Mage, but this time turn up the difficulty setting.

Whatever you do, don't roll a mixed class, because you will end up only using one half of your character's ability's.
This is only true if you pick poorly. I have a stealthy-magic character, and I use just about all his skills constantly. You just have to be wise in what skills you pick.

This is much more true for morrowind than oblivion. Try making a paladin in morrowind... Thank god for mana regen :D

If it is on PC then mods are completely neccessary.
I suggest you play without any mods first, besides fixer mods like the unofficial patch etc. All these mods will just confuse you if you've never actually finished the game before.

I picked Oblivion up again recently and tried a sneaky marksman, and halfway through got bored of the crappy archery. I'm now a swordsman in light armour, which is stupid. I'd honestly suggest sticking with a mage. If it's too easy, ramp up the difficulty. Higher difficulty = more skillups in fights because you'll be hitting them more.
Mages can make themselves invisible, telekenisfy far away things (to steal them), frenzy enemies, summon stuff to fight for them, heal themselves. There's loads of cool stuff. Shame i've never rolled a mage though...wait did i say rolled? Shit.

I dont think the combat in oblivion was ever the point, its cheesy, yeah.

For me, it was collecting.

I had collections of tons of shit scattered over the countryside.

"Do i want this awesome looking sword, or five more skulls? Yeah, plenty of swords out there."

I'd say this, as all three aspects of combat are incredibly boring.

I never found vanilla magic to be of any real potency. Static (as in stays the same, not of an electric classification) spells are just so boring.

Archery is as much a joke, either being too menial to bother with or too potent for a challenge. On higher difficulty it was only worth bothering with after you got some decent magicked arrows to dupe, which the game prevents you from making.

Melee combat is just boring and annoying as well. The special moves are underwhelming and never seemed to work to any effect, and the sheild becomes rather useless once you get to the stunlock enemies such as cougars and bears. Hand to hand combat is even more pointless, as it offers no real means to do considerable damage.
