Its a genuinely good game, and at this point, its pretty damn cheap. If you have some disposable income and time on your hands, why not give it a go?

If you have a PC that will run it they yes buy it. If your getting it on your xbox your shooting yourself in the foot and should probably take that money and put it into a bank account to make your computer better so it will handle oblivion and the new elder scrolls game. The Mods you can get for these games makes the ability to play it endless with user created quests and items.

In short) Buy it for the PC not Xbox.
You know, there are plenty of people out there who enjoy games perfectly well without mods. Consoles also have convenience, a controller, and a lack of console commands (irony_1) that just make the experience different. Again, some people enjoy playing games this way.

Video games are generally about having fun. Gaming on a PC is superior in your opinion. In many ways, objectively, it can be. But as long as gaming is about enjoyment, the bottom line is going to be whatever's the most fun for the individual.
Its polite to point out the advantages of getting a game like Oblivion on the PC, but its just poor etiquette to attempt to derail a thread into a "Console-PC" debate and assert that the view you don't like is some kind of big mistake.
Problem is that there is a lot of piss-poor design decisions they made for the game, and mods can fix those. I just maxed my level in Merchantile today and that's because I had a simple mod that allowed me to sell one item at a time instead of moving a slider after every sale. The 360 actually has a shortcut button for this that the PC doesn't but that still means hitting 3 buttons or so between each sale, in a certain order. I don't really care about mods that expand the game, but I want some to fix the bad UI the game has by default.

OT: To answer the question in the title, I give an emphatic... "Meh..."

The game is good, but I just can't get excited about it. I loved Morrowind far more than Oblivion, but I can't say that's the best game for you because you might not like RPGs and their rules as much as I do.

EDIT: ON the other hand, if you are just after the pretty graphics of Oblivion, Morrowind can be modded [http://forums.encyclopediadramatica.com/showthread.php?p=321965] to look better than Oblivion.

Thank you very much for posting that Morrowind link! I've been meaning to mod it for ages but never really could be assed to actually do anything about it. That was a nifty thread. And by Blind Io, does it look awesome.
Just a word of warning: those mods eat resources like a mofo. I had a 8800GT that couldn't run it at my customary 1920x1080 settings, and at 1366x768, it was just barely playable (~15 FPS is my guess). Now I'm on a GTX470, and at 1920x1080, its only slightly more playable than it was with the lower resolution with the older card.
Cheers for the heads up. I did suspect that it would cause a major performance hit. You don't get pretty shinies like that for free after all. I also suspect that I wont be able to run it very well, but I'm sure gonna give a go. If it turns out bad, then I at least tried.

I have the game for console, and I would actually recommend it for PC. I mean, it's fun and all for consoles, but then I hear about a light saber mod, or something else awesome and I wish I had gotten it for PC. Most of the mixed opinions are about the base game, and there's a mod to fix a lot of those issues.

That said, if you aren't going to dabble in mods, by all means get it for console. A note of warning, if you get the GOTY edition, don't become a vampire. The quest to cure you is broken on the GOTY version.

Everybody's saying that he should get it for PC or 360. What happens with the PS3 version? Is it bugged, flawed or somehow unplayable? Because I don't have a gaming PC or a 360, and I really don't care for bugged games.
I'm just quoting this part, but I did read all the post.

I've been searching around and I've seen a lot of complaints about the PS3 version crashing and bugging and doing weird stuff. It's not weird, I mean, at the time, not many people knew how to effectively program for the PS3. But reading about how you have to put thought on the leveling up process.... that doesn't sound like my cup of tea.
Understandable about some people having issues. I just was lucky and didn't encounter any. Same thing happened to a friend of mine recently who played New Vegas. I hear about a ton of bugs and glitches in the game and yet my friend has played the hell out of it and never seen a single one. Although I did play the GoTY version, so they might have fixed some of those issues on that version.

Try it out, its a ton of fun on PC with Mods. Expect to easily lose hundreds of hours in this game.

Personally i like it a good bit, but the large lack of balance (imho) stopped me from enjoying it after a while, even with mods. I could not play a pure rogue character and stay competitive after i passed level 20, no matter what i tried. Magic is that ridiculously powerfull in that game.

Just keep in mind a few things; you MUST use magic with whatever you decide to play to be "competitive" later in the game. Bows arent very strong. Stealth.. while primitive, is quite usefull too.

Anyway, magic only becomes trully important once you real level 15 and higher, until then you can play wahtever you want and still kick major ass.

As for mods, i strongly suggest: OOO (oscuro oblivion overhaul), MMM (martigen monster mod). These mods makes the game a LOT, LOOOOT richer and funnier, like, massively better and a lot funnier to explore and fight in. Go for OOO mod first.
I personnaly added a physics mod to increase the stangely low gravity in the game too.

A bit old by now, but if you get it you will never stop playing. It's not that addictive, but there's so much to do

Oh yes. You're given so much freedom in that game. You should get it.

Oblivion has a lot of great things, and also a lot of MEH. Lots of huge MEH. I'd recommend getting the PC version and modding the combat system within an inch of its life.

I preferred Fallout 3 but Oblivion is alright, you can probably pick it up quite cheap now which is a bonus

if your an old school pc rpg player or a fan of morrowind you might find it entertaining at first and then quickly realize what a disaster the vanilla oblivion game is.

However, if thats the case you can mod the game to oblivion (yuck, pun tacular)
With balancing mods like francesco's or oscuro's you can really make a great game out of the toxic dump bethesda pawned off as a finished product

I never had this problem... Maybe you're just doing it wrong.
The only thing I found is that leveling up either Alchemy or Speechcraft were horrendously difficult.

More than worth it.

You will get so much playtime out of this game. This game was one of the best purchases that I ever made. I got it for $20 with a free copy of BioShock one of the best deals ever.

Eeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, maybe. Rent it first if you can. If you REALLY like it, then go ahead. I made the mistake of BUYING it outright based solely on recommendations from other people and ended up hating it.

Worst way to spend $30, EVER.
This. I absolutely adore Bioware and can't stand Bethesda. Fallout 3 was OK for me but not a favorite by any means. Bethesda has weak characters in my opinion and weak lore that you have to work too hard to learn in the first place. I spent more time in Oblivion hunting deer and dungeon crawling than anything else and the main quest was so dull it felt like torture.

I say rent it. I looooooooove RPGs but I can't do TES. Morrowind I would recommend ironically. I may even rent the new one to look it over but Bethesda has never given me a real good payoff for buying one of their games. I thought Oblivion was going to and I was very wrong.

It's an awesome game and I got it for the 360, PS3, and PC (don't judge me, it was different years apart). The PC version is pretty entertaining, if just for the mods. Go to TESNexus.com for a lot of different mods (... and yes this includes the nude mods and new body mods too). Right now I'm in Elswyer, trotting across the sands, meeting new fellow Khajiits, and having three different little kitty girls and Taokaka following me. You can also get the construction set, so you can make stuff for yourself. I suggest downloading the CM Companions Mod made by Blackie if you want some companions to follow you around. Not all of the companions need the CM Companions Mod, but a lot of them do. There are also a lot of different graphic enhancing mods if your computer can handle it. I like to fiddle around with the Construction Set as well.

P.S.
(open console) ~

(select target) *click*

(enter command) kill

saved me on multiple occasions.
I'm not much of a tgm type of guy. I do like the tcl feature though.

P.S.S.
(open console) ~

(enter command) Player.CreateFullActorCopy

Create an army of one! (play on words, there's a lot of yourself)

Those commands are just basic ones though, I know a whole lot more.

Also the Game of the Year Edition with Oblivion, Knights of the Nine, and Shivering Isles, is only $19.99 right now, so there's not much excuse not to get it.

Look it's cheap as hell right now, and it's a great game. Scratch great, it's phenomenal. You shouldn't need any more incentive.
