I want to pick Oblivion, game of the year edition up on my laptop during the winter steam sale when it is dirt cheap, but it doesn't run that well on it, I get pretty bad FPS at times, and the character models are, egh. But; a local electronics store has a few copies of the Steelbook pretty cheep for the PS3, I wouldn't be able to mod it in any way whatsoever, but the FPS will be improved, the characters would look great, and I would get some of the bonuses thrown in (making of DVD, map, rather epic casing)

In short, should I pick up the steelbook for the PS3, with improved graphics, FPS, and gimmicks, or pick up the glitch, yet cheap and moddable, pc version during the steam sale? Also, does anyone know if the steelbook is a limited time offer? I was thinking of getting the game in the sale for pc, and if it doesn't work out, picking the steelbook up, but things like this are usually only availble for a short while.

Yes I know how Oblivion works on my PC, I borrowed the installation disc from a friend to try, but he is pretty anti-borrowing,lending,used games, so I had to un-install it. Game is by all means playable, just wouldn't mind it a little prettier and smoother.
The store also doesn't have a PC version of the steelbook, if some people think I should get that.

If you want to try Oblivion before Skyrim comes out then you may as well get a taste of it on PS3. If you can't run Oblivion well though, then you won't be able to run Skyrim, let alone mod it. What do you want it for? To play it and have fun or make it a never-ending customized experience of cool shit? Also, I don't think the steelbook will stop shipping for another year. You don't mass produce something like that to just reignite interest in the series, and maybe generate new sales. If that's what it is then they've got balls of steel.

You can get graphical improvement mods for the PC version but if your laptop barely runs it as it is then you'd have issues with them. They do change quite a lot and some of them are large files and will hit your FPS a bit more.

If you can get it for cheap enough and can overlook the clunky look of it then i'd suggest getting the Steelbook for PS3.

Just note I am a PC only gamer and don't normally advise getting things like Oblivion on console when the PC version can be modded.

However....

You said your laptop has FPS issues which will probably be made worse by improving the graphics with mods.

Oblivion is a good game and is worth playing through. If you can get it for a reasonable price then I would say go for it and get it for PS3. Even with the lack of glorious graphics it is still a pretty decent game and good for wasting a few hours with.

I will be getting Skyrim for the PS3, I just put in my pre-order this week. I've been considering getting the pc version of Oblivion due to it being cheaper, and moddable. I don't mind bad graphics, I prefer good ones, but they aren't game-breaking for me.
Do you think that the lack of graphics, fps, and the lack of gimmicks like the steel book and map, is worth the modding and cheap-price of the pc version?

Hate to break it too you, but the characters in oblivion are pretty ugly on the console version as well. The only way to really change that is PC modding. Decent game though. The PC release is good and actually pretty bug free if you install the unofficial patches (I can give you links if you are interested) but if you don't intend to mod the game I would get the PS3 version. Plus, it already looks like your laptop can't handle the game, it would almost certainly crash and burn if you tried to mod it.

If you care enough, it would be a good idea to install the game with unofficial patches to see if that clears up the problems you are having. Otherwise get the PS3 version.

Er... I don't need to own the game to now that is a modded image... As I said, I had previously installed a friend's copy, I have also played it until I am out of the sewer. >.>

My pc CAN play the game, when I had the copy, I even installed some facial texture packs. I am getting this odd pixilization around the characters when I play. The frame rate drop only affects the overworld, 'dungeons' are perfectly fine, runs great, actually. Maybe I'll borrow the game again and try some higher quality texture, and some optimization mods.
