I said you'd get a review at Post #3000 and here I am. So, on with the Review!
Psychonauts is a Puzzley-Platformer-Action-Adventure Game (Or PPAAG, I invented that myself) from way back in 2005, which is often overlooked by gamers at large. It places you in the shoes, as well as hat and goggles, of Raz; the young boy who runs away from the Circus. Yea, that's how werid this game is. After escaping on the World's Smallest Pony, Raz travels to a summer camp used to train Psychonauts, who seem to be like the psychic division of the C.I.A. that we didn't know existed until now. Once he's snuck into the camp, however, Raz discovers that not everything is as good as it looks and he uncovers a plot to take over the world using brain-tanks.
Most of the game takes place in other people's subconcious minds, which you enter through a door in their head. This is where level designers clearly had a lot of fun. You travel from the trenches to theatres and even to a tiny city of talking lungfish, where you become a Godzilla-like monster, terrorising the city.
There are some minor gameplay issues that I found annoying, one of which is the difficulty of judging distances when jumping from one palce to another. I often fell and had to restart part of a level due to being unable to work out what sort of jump I needed to use (You have 3, by the way). Another problem isn't so much gameplay as design, as there were some very annoying boss fights towards the end. But I can't exactly give bad points to a game for actually challenging me, can I?
Now onto the good stuff. I can honestly say that Psychonauts made me laugh out loud when they wanted me to. The game's been sprinkled with enough clever (and incredibly cheesy) jokes to make an otherwise odd game into an odd game that's also very funny.
I'd reccommend this to anyone who thinks they like games as it's a wonderful change from any other gaming genre and is a delight to play. And if you're still unsure, here's the trailer.
