Every now and then I seem to go through a phase of figuratively tripping over new webcomics while browsing the net. Possibly because the majority of new ones come recommended from other artists, coupled with the fact I can waste whole afternoons reading an old favourite's archive.
Just going to list some here that I would recommend. Feel free to contribute! Inbetween I'll add the URLs of the other webcomics that I would consider too well-known to describe.
Questionable Content (www.questionablecontent.net)
Was recommended in a newspost from Bigger Than Cheeses. Essentially a light-hearted soap opera with intricate and intelligent jokes every four panels, following the lives of 2, spanning to several, indie rock kids, their coffee shop, and their talking robots. Updates every weekday.
Cyanide & Happiness (www.explosm.net/comics)
Ctrl+Alt+Del (www.cad-comic.com)
VGcats (www.vgcats.com)
SNAFU (www.snafu-comics.com)
I've been reading these comics for a VERY long time, so I'm not entirely sure how I heard about them, but I think it was VGcats that I got the original source from. There's a large collection of webcomic artists here, with the kingpin being Dave and the main contributor being alternative artist Alex Pardee. Updates are sporadic, but have an impressive back catalogue to keep you interested, and interesting newsposts and event details are as frequent as the comics.
Penny Arcade (www.penny-arcade.com)
Bigger Than Cheeses (www.biggercheese.com) This comic series was recommended to me by my brother, who showed it to me during around it's 750th comic, when the author was making parodies of a certain Ctrl+Alt+Del story arc, of which the drama will be notable to most regular readers. It's wacky and you can drop in anytime without needing too much filling in on the details. Also, it's recently come out of a hiatus, resuming it's schedule of updating once every week or so.
Girl Genius (www.girlgeniusonline.com) If memory serves this was a banner ad I clicked on by accident that brought me to this website. It's a beautifully drawn steampunk fantasy series with eight volumes of back-story, and a sense of humour that flits between dark, slapstick and downright strange. Updates are once every few days, which can be quite frustrating with the amount of cliffhangers in it.
Flipside (www.flipsidecomics.com) Lastly, a more risqué webcomic I picked up from a banner ad on Girl Genius (I think). An anime-inspired tale of swordplay, poker, magic, warring states, and a girl in a jester outfit. I highly recommend reading "Book Zero", the selection of comics that the artist hides out of shame for the diminished artwork, but the understanding of the story is heightened greatly after reading it. Also, there are cute little "intermission" comics between chapters; black and white sketches of the artists in chibi throwing bricks at each other. The comic has a great deal of artwork and sketches on the front page, and it updates Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Oh, and there's lesbians.
Hope you enjoy!
