Obsidian entertainment have had to layoff between 20-30 employees, including some of the team working on the future South Park RPG. This has reportedly also caused the cancellation of an unannounced next-gen game.

How do you feel about this? Are you sad to see the company behind Fallout New Vegas and Alpha Protocol suffer, and are you concerned about what this will mean for their future output?

I hope they didn't lay off the QA team. That monkey was adorable!

Seriously though, this is fairly sad. Obsidian did some great things, and were arguably the best storytellers in the industry. One too many buggy, half-finished games caught up with them, I guess.

Joystiq's got one [http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/14/report-obsidian-hit-with-layoffs-south-park-team-affected-fut/]

Their forums [http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/57290-layoff-hits-obsidian/] had a post too that showed:

Akil Hooper (producer/designer at OEI)
"11 years, nearly a dozen shipped titles, Designer, Lead, Producer. 1 cancelled game, survived 7 layoffs, 8th got me. Not a bad track record."

Jason Fader (producer)
"*sigh*"

Justin Reynard (programmer)
"Today marks my 3 year anniversary working at Obsidian Entertainment. To my coworkers (and sadly the ones we've lost) you guys are amazing.<3"

Ashley Betters (QA tester)
"No longer work at Obsidian. I guess this means I will have to start buying my own pens."

According to LI, producer Tess Treadwell and designer Sydney Wolfram (and three interns) seem to be got laid off too.
Way to predict the future there @BloatedGuppy because a QA tester was one.

Haven't seen anything as to the total number though.

Sad, they're one of the few still independent medium-sized companies.

I hope this doesn't end with an acquisition.
