FEAR Combat still has a fan community keeping servers up which is something I find interesting. I reckon a number of otherwise defunct multiplayer games be it due to Gamespy shutting down or the devs pulling the plug still have fans supporting and keeping those games alive.

Since it recently came out that some people had been keeping a whole City of Heroes server online on the down low, who the fuck knows how many other multiplayer games aren't as defunct as they look? Wildstar had a cult following, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few people who'd found a way to still play that.

Licenced games seem to come and go like the wind, and are available for relatively short amounts of time, in most cases.

In May 2016, PlatinumGames (Vanquish, Bayonetta series) released a TMNT game called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan. It wasn't great, didn't get particularly favourable review scores - thats not the point - but the game was only available for a whole 224 days before being pulled from every digital storefront.

They also went on to release a The Legend of Korra and Transformers game in 2014 and 2015 - both games barely made it past their 3rd and 2nd birthdays respectively, before being removed from sale.

Another one is the 2013 Deadpool game by Activison, that was available for about 2 1/2 years before being pulled. Curiously, it was re-released in 2015 for the Xbox One and PS4, before it got removed yet again, just a few days before that version's 2nd birthday.

Licenses are weird.

Damn, you beat me to it iny the Deadpool front and the games Platinum games did for Activision. if you wanted the game at least you can still buy copies of Deadpool (every game store GameStop or otherwise have a whole bunch of used copies), transformers devastation, and TMNT. With Korra everybody shit out of luck. I was always going to buy the game at one point, but it rarely ever went on sale and I even I felt the fifteen bucks wasn't worth it.

licenses are definitely a weird case, but with Activision they're always about that quick buck. They rarely hold on to any license that is not long-term nor do they see it profitable enough.

...or Auto Assault, which was one of the shortest lived MMOs to actually reach release.

Also, there are public COH servers based off the secret private server out now, including the Issue 25 updates. The biggest is called City of Heroes: Homecoming.

Issue 25 added a Ranged/Defense archetype called Sentinel.
