Odd stereotypes you don't get

I was wondering about the various stereotypes that we have in society, and one or two struck me as really odd that I had no idea where they came from. Now, this isn't a thread to complain about how wrong stereotypes are, just the ones that don't seem to make all that much sense or have little to no basis.

The stereotype that all black people like fried chicken just sounds completely ridiculous. I know that most stereotypes are at least partly based on fact, but there are loads of non-blacks around the world who like fried chicken, and there must be loads of actual blacks that don't like fried chicken or are vegetarians/vegans. If not, KFC (invented by a white guy) wouldn't be so successful.

That's why, whenever I see these Photoshopped pictures or videos of black people going mad over a Bargain Bucket, the joke completely passes me by.

Also, this isn't really a stereotype, moreso some kind of inside joke that no-one really believes in, but what about the whole thing of Welsh people apparently having sex with sheep? Is that just some kind of stupid rumour the English spread round? Was it people that'd never had prior experience with the Welsh happen to stumble upon him shagging sheep, assumed that they all did it, and passed that on?

The black people liking KFC makes sense to me. And at the risk of sounding completely racist I shall proceed to explain my point! In the USA at least, there are a lot of black people in the southern states, and KFC comes from the same area and is based on recipes of "soul food" which came out of the black culture of the region. I'm by no means and expert on the subject, but that's what I can gather.

And yes, that thing about the Welsh having sex with sheep is just a joke that gets passed around. It's basically based on the fact that there are said to be loads of sheep farmers in Wales.

I'm finding it hard to think of any stereotype which I don't understand, but your KFC example made me think of one. Back people loving watermelons. What's that all about?

Ah, that self deprecation and nearly apologizing for not being as nice as people think we are is also very Canadian.

You're right about the igloos though. You do have to remember that even if they do steal our igloos, they still won't have as much need of them as we do given all of those moose and polar bears running rampant. Nothing keeps the moose out like a good solid igloo.

It's because of Hitler, probably the most famous Austrian in the world, although of course that doesn't condone it. One person doing a bad thing doesn't mean everyone from his country are bad.

Isn't that because, well, a lot of hardcore animals activists ARE vegeterians, fighting for animal rights and stuff? Again, stupid stereotype (most are), but I can see where it comes from.

I'm from Australia, and I can understand why someone would think that everyone here is racist.
