There is such a stereotype? Really? Wow. I mean, if you said "white people can't jump" then yeah, but "dance"? I never though of dancing as a racial thing.

Then again, I'm white and I can't dance, so maybe it's not just me being ungraceful but just an inherited trait.
Oh yeah dude i hear it all the time . Then people are shocked when i say i can't dance . I usually get the " What do you mean you can't dance , all black people can dance , it's in their blood". So apparently by that logic , i should inherently know hoe to dance , whereas every other race must learn to do it . Weird i know.

I understand that one.
I'm from Australia, and I can understand why someone would think that everyone here is racist.
Mostly because a large, ignorant, alcoholoc, vocal part of our population is racist.
Austria, not Australia.

Derp on my part.
Anyhow, my statement towards Australia still stands.
Never heard of Austria being racist though.

I was wondering about the various stereotypes that we have in society, and one or two struck me as really odd that I had no idea where they came from. Now, this isn't a thread to complain about how wrong stereotypes are, just the ones that don't seem to make all that much sense or have little to no basis.

The stereotype that all black people like fried chicken just sounds completely ridiculous. I know that most stereotypes are at least partly based on fact, but there are loads of non-blacks around the world who like fried chicken, and there must be loads of actual blacks that don't like fried chicken or are vegetarians/vegans. If not, KFC (invented by a white guy) wouldn't be so successful.

That's why, whenever I see these Photoshopped pictures or videos of black people going mad over a Bargain Bucket, the joke completely passes me by.
i can honestly say...that this stereotype, isnt much of a stereotype....because its pretty much true.

i live in the south with a high concentration of black people, and if you ever drove past a pop-eyes, KFC, and (god help you) a churches chicken, you would completely understand.

watermelon was back in slave days to keep them from dehydrating in the heat.
Grape drank (i said that correctly) and kool-aid actually makes sense if you ever been to a black neighborhood.

the only think i dont get, is actually the racial slur 'cracker'.
or honkey for that matter.
From what I have learned "cracker" is short for "whip Cracker" as in slave owner.

That the Dutch are still called the Dutch. Seriously people, Dutch people don't come from Germany!

Cracker is a term to insult/describe predominantly Caucasian/white/pale skinned people. It came from the sound a whip made when used, deriving from the fact that most slavers during the early American years where white.

Quote button's not working for me. ><

I can vouche that black people love grape drink . They love everything grape flavoured . I am black and love everything that has grape written on it , and i only learned it was a stereotype like 3 years ago ( i am 23), needless to say i was astonished!

Now i also love cool-aid and fried chiken ... I guess that makes me a stereotipical black man ,...

OT : white people can't dance . That's one i don't get . Can someone explain this to me? And can someone else explain why everyone assumes i am a great dancer?
Huh, I'm black as well, and I am like the exact opposite. I used to like fried chicken when I was younger, like 10 maybe, but now I am not that fond of it. I particularly dislike KFC and I truly hate any sort of grape flavored drank or flavoring minus grape flavored jolly ranchers and actual grapes. I do like watermelon, but I prefer cantaloupe and honeydew melons. I do like fried catfish a lot though, which I also believe is a stereotype associated with black people albeit lesser known or talked about. But that might just fall into the category of black people like any thing fried in general stereotyping. I was never fond of drink mixes besides hot apple cider and hot chocolate, so I was never very fond of kool-aid either. But then again. most of my school friends seem to think that if they peeled off all of my skin, they would find a Caucasian kid in there (yes, my friends have actually said that to me. No matter which school I go to, they eventually tell me that's what they think, and I always find this to be quite funny that everyone I meet seems to perceive this after knowing me for a long time) so I probably can not serve as an accurate measure for the stereotypical black person.
On topic, I've really got nothing. Maybe the stereotype that Australia is filled with kangaroos, koalas and weird Caucasian people who speak in strange tongues (Ello Koala on a gum tree all mate! !?!?)

Well saltine is just a type of cracker so thats just "cracker" with a bit of a pun thrown in. But I have absolutely no idea what Honkie means.

I've never really understood the sterotypes about black people and various fod. Half blakc myself, and I do indeed enjoy fried chicken, and watermelon. Tons of people do, they're delicious! A lot of food is really good, how did black people get s special pass?

If we are really gonna have food being a sterotype though, can we just go all out have lay claim to all delicious foods belonging solely to black people?

All Americans are loud, rude, and ignorant. The loud I'll give you. Every time I've traveled abroad these are complaints leveled at me. Always seems to me that the people bemoaning my lack of understanding of their culture sure as hell don't understand mine.

Happens a lot on the internet too.

I don't understand why women are supposed to be poor drivers. Sure, they have a MARGINALLY inferior depth perception, but I seriously doubt that would count. Does it have to do with some macho ideal?
Statistically a woman is more likely to get in to and cause a minor to moderate accident than a man. Cause or reasoning? Anything would be purely speculative.
Interestingly men are much more likely to cause a FATAL accident. At least under the age of 30.

edit: both of these statistics have been true at least since the 80's. Before cell phones.

I dont get where the black person=fried chicken thing comes from originally

being Australian I didnt even know it was a "thing"..that was untill there was some controversy over a KFC cricket add...where some Australian guy (whos actually kind of a dick in the other adds...there was a series of them)

he's in the oposing teams seating area...they happen to be black (I think because they were zimbabwe or somthing) anyway he whips out a bucket of KFC and everyones happy

but yeah..I didnt get why it was "racist", and then I think most of the oposition was coming from America...I really cant remember

another similar thing was there was a "revival" of this old Australian skit show called "hey hey its saturday"..where people can go and perform acts...I group of guys was re-creating one they done years ago..it involved them singing and using "blackface"

anyway it caused a storm and was taken out of context..I think Bill o reily even had his say on the matter

anyway...isnt it that hipsters aparently liek this brand of beer called "Pabst blue ribbon"?

I can second the stereotypes about blacks. But now that I know where the fried chicken one comes from, it sort of makes more sense.

Let's see what stereotypes don't make sense to me: women have lots of cats. Apparently it's something related to not being successful with dating or something.
the "crazy cat lady"

this one actually kind of makes sense
usually its if somones older and loney they just gets cats (cats require ess energy than dogs) ...and somtimes theres too many cats, its kind of like an offshoot of "hoarding" mabye

like I said...old..lonley more likley to have those kinds of issues

Because all young women are hooked to their phone, and would rather die than put it down for a minute. They are fine drivers for a quick jaunt, as long as it is a very short distance, or provides plenty of phone-checking time at frequent red lights.
I think it may have been around before mobile phones became as big as they are now

I've got some random guesses

- traditionally cars were the MANS domain, women arnt into cars!
- going on generalisation perhaps women were "less inclined" to master drving or be interested in cars
-I did hear somthing about depth perception and all that

anyway random guess..I could be completly wrong

Teens only think about sex, and think much less of you if you haven't had any.

When in reality, sex was an uncommon talking point with friends in high school and everyone I mentioned virginity to remained straightfaced and unruffled.

So... yeah.
