I was just thinking about Orbital Drop Shock Troopers. Then I read Shock Troopers again... and again... and again... then BAM! It hit my like a ton of bricks on an retarded panda. Why the fuck do they have silenced weapons if they're fucking SHOCK TROOPERS? Surely I'm not the only one who's thought about this.

You're a hardened alien soldier used to jumping out of a starship, fucking everything up and jumping back into starships moments before they fuck everything up you didn't have time to fuck up. Everything you do in your life is extremely loud, you're probably partially deaf by now and used to constant loud disorietating noise.

What could be more shocking than your soldiers being killed and torn apart in near total silence? Quiet things shouldn't be so destructive.

I never really considered them shock troopers, more like the SWAT team.

ODST just sounds cooler.

Not all of them do. Dutch has a Magnum and a Spartan Laser. Now that would be shocking if you got attacked by him.

Cuz they figured that the "shock" of a big, heavy drop pod hitting the ground was enough "shock".

Shock troops (or troopers, if you will) were I thought, troops designated to lead an attack. they aren't actually meant to be particularly "shocking". Hence why the ODSTs are the first to drop into the conflict.

Though my first response to this "conundrum" would have been "yes, and"?, in a suitably apathetic tone.

I'd be more worried about the fact that it's really not a very good game. I finished it yesterday and was more than underwhelmed. I just didn't really like it.

Does it matter the silenced weapons are barely silenced you can shoot from a mile away and they still know where you are

I thought of ODST closer related to Paratroopers, go behind enemy lines screw sh*t up in anticipation of the main fighting force then join it, Just like Band of Brothers... I think in one flash-back, a Marine referred to an ODST as "paratrooper" once.

Shock Troops today are basically: Green Berets, Spetsnaz, Marine Corps First Recon, Stosstruppen... So there basically Shock Troopers are any military unit that is designated and specially trained/armed to lead an army in an advance.

While Orbital Drop Ship Troopers does make more since, and flows of the tongue more easily (at least in my opinion) the name is actually Orbital Drop Shock Troopers.
And when I hear 'Shock trooper' I always think of a force that hits hard, fast and loud to disorient and weaken the enemy so that the main force can move in behind and mop up more easily.
