Hello fellow Escapists, I have recently went to university and to my suprise, I can't view/print any work that my lecturers put online because I have office 2003 and they were saved in office 2007. Now, I really don't feel like paying £60 for a 2007 upgrade and I have heard that there is a free download to make 2003 compatible but I can't find it anywhere. Any help would be appreciated. To add discussion value, have any of you had a similar problem with school/college/university and what did you/your teachers do about it? My lecturers couldn't give a damn about it and told me to buy 2007, apparently, that is what student loans are for...

I had this same problem. Search google for a "windows 2007 to 2003 convertor". Once you download it, it will convert your document to a usable version.

And it's free.

When you try to open the file does it not try to get you to install a .docx viewer or something? Alternatively just use Open Office.

Back when I graduated in 2007, one of my college professors (the head computer professor) told us not to give him any files from Office 2007 because it no long creates normal .doc files; Office 2007 creates DRMed archive files. That's why I'm not ever going to use anything past Office 2003 and will use instead OpenOffice once Office 2003 becomes obsolete. I would try using OpenOffice to see if it'll open your files, I'd say it's at least a 50/50 shot. I don't know anything about the 2003 add-on to read 2007 files though.
