As we all know today is Memorial Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Commonwealth nations. This thread is for essentially everything Memorial day related. Pictures, stories, plans, opinions on veterans related subjects, etc.

Personal thoughts: I've always found the debate over whether having barbecues and such for memorial day was in bad taste, as opposed to more solemn ceremonies. I think both fit quite well with the occasion. We must both remember the fallen, and celebrate what they fought for. However I hate memorial day sales. Consumerism being celebrated on a day of remembrance? How about no.

God bless and have a fantastic day.

Actually, Remembrance Day is held on 11th November in Commonwealth countries, nothing happening today in those regards over here. Not to rain on your parade, of course, remembering need not be restricted to one day per year.

Indeed, November 11th is Canada's day of somber reflection.

Still, in honor of the American troops who fought beside Canadians in Europe, I will observe a moment of silence.

Indeed, it's November 11th for us, but who says you should only do it once a year?

Interesting related story: a friend of mine is going on a school field trip to France this year, and she has been given a particular honour of being in the 'honour guard' who will be giving tribute to the Canadian soldiers who fell on Juno Beach. They will be the only ones allowed on the beach during that time.

You know for someone who worked in a military museum for a long time and who's read a great deal of war history, I always forget military holidays (this and pearl harbor day). Still, have a good day and such.

I visited the Duxford D-Day Anniversary Airshow twice this weekend. We had a special C-47, Whiskey-Seven, from across the pond, along with a whole host of vintage warbirds......and 'Stripes', the specially painted Typhoon.

The photos I got were well worth the visit :)
